About the opportunity
The Sydney Environment Institute (SEI) is is a globally recognised multidisciplinary environmental research institute. SEI’s mission is to build multidisciplinary research collaborations that tackle the climate and biodiversity crises, with a core focus on bringing the social sciences and humanities into conversation with other disciplines. SEI is one of the University-wide multidisciplinary initiatives (MDIs) within which the University concentrates intellectual resources from many disciplines to address the grand challenges facing society.
The Deputy Director – Engagement is responsible for leading engagement activities of SEI and supporting the SEI Director in effective governance, planning, communicating and achieving the academic and operational vision, strategies and goals of SEI in overall alignment with the whole-of-University vision and strategy. This is achieved through collaborative engagement, support and promotion of progressive and productive research and a clear Centre strategy.
This is an academic professorial (Level E) position requiring extensive research, research leadership and engagement experience in a relevant field. This position has accountability for supporting the MDI’s strategic and operational objectives, leading engagement internally and externally and leading collaborative research projects.
The objectives for the Deputy Director – Engagement are to:
- Establish engagement opportunities, both internal and external, in collaboration with researchers, Faculties, and Schools.
- Develop and maintain relationships with funders and current and possible project partners in industry, government and universities.
- Engage researchers at all academic levels, across disciplines and faculties at the University of Sydney.
- Provide added value to our University of Sydney members, complementary with home faculty /school, specifically in relation to external engagement aligned with SEI’s mission and strategic goals.
- Support the SEI ethos and culture to encourage collaborative interdisciplinary partnerships.
The Deputy Director position is a fractional appointment of 0.2 FTE, with a substantive academic position being held in Faculty.
About you

Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with external stakeholders, including extensive and high-level links with industry and government and a demonstrated understanding of how industry and government operate that that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the MDI and University.

Has strong active networks and relationships with researchers across the University of Sydney.

Demonstrated experience in leading multidisciplinary, including cross-faculty, research teams.

Experience and an appetite for supporting individual academics and multidisciplinary teams in their external engagement activities.

An appreciation for the mission of SEI and the value of social sciences and humanities in tackling the climate and biodiversity crises.

Term and remuneration
The term of the appointment is 2 years. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.

Similarly, your ongoing employment is conditional upon the satisfactory maintenance of all relevant clearances and background check requirements.
