Position Description
The role of the Student Support Worker is to provide proactive and therapeutic wellbeing, behaviour and learning support to students at North Academy.
About us
North Academy is an Independent Special Assistance School located at West Wallsend. We provide education to young people in years 9, 10 and 11 who find that mainstream education does not suit their needs.

A person who can effectively provide 1:1 instructional support, adapt to classroom needs, and assist in managing diverse learning and behavioural challenges.

An individual who is vigilant about monitoring student behaviour, capable of implementing behaviour support strategies, and prioritizes safety by minimizing potential risks.

Somone who is comfortable working closely with teachers and staff, contributing to risk assessments, student plans, and participating in relevant meetings.

An individual who can accurately record case notes, complete reports promptly, and assist in planning and coordinating excursions and other student support activities.
Snapshot of Key Duties

Establish and maintain healthy connections with students.

Work in a non-judgmental manner and provide support for students.
-
Work with students in the classroom setting providing 1:1 instructional support.

Assist with support, resources and daily classroom management.
-
Assist with the student wellbeing program by preparing and providing daily fruit and food options.
-
Monitor student behaviour and implement strategies to assist them to remain at their baseline functioning.
-
Assist students with class routines, student engagement in activities and implementing behaviour support plans strategies.

Provide immediate support to students who may require 1:1 coregulation in class or throughout the school day in line with Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) strategies.

Be aware of the possibility of violence and seek appropriate action to minimise the impact of potentially critical situations.

Record daily case notes for students who required 1:1 intervention, support and regulation assistance.

Provide accurate written reports in a timely manner when required, reports include but are not limited to, incident and first aid reports.

Plan, coordinate and attend weekly excursions with students in line with policy and procedures.

Collaborate with staff and write risk assessments for each excursion.

Provide input into student plans and attend meetings regarding Individual Education Plans, Learning and Support meetings, clinical support, and intervention programs.
Essential Criteria:

Minimum Certificate III in Education Support or similar or relevant work experience in relevant field

Building Positive Student Relationships : Experience in establishing and maintaining connections with students to foster a safe and supportive learning environment.

Providing Support and Implementing Behaviour/Wellbeing Strategies : Experience in supporting students and applying effective behaviour and wellbeing strategies within a classroom setting.

Managing Stressful Situations : Demonstrated capacity to remain calm and effective under pressure, especially when responding to challenging or potentially critical situations.

Communication and Documentation Skills : Strong ability to accurately record daily case notes, prepare incident reports, write risk assessments and plan excursions.
