ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Data Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the organization's data strategy, harnessing cutting-edge technical acumen to conceptualize, construct, and continually enhance a comprehensive data infrastructure. The position seeks to optimize data systems, ensuring reliability, scalability, and security, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to understand, interpret, and cater to diverse data needs.

You will stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry best practices, driving the continuous evolution and improvement of the data landscape to meet the dynamic requirements of the business.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and Develop Data Pipelines : Create scalable data pipelines for collecting, processing, and storing data from various sources, ensuring real-time data integration where necessary.
  • Build and Maintain Data Infrastructure : Develop and maintain databases, data systems, and data warehouses that support a variety of data initiatives, including Data Lakehouse Architecture, Data Mesh, and Data Vault.
  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams : Work closely with BI developers, geospatial analysts, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements and implement efficient, effective solutions.
  • Optimize Data Infrastructure : Continuously optimize data infrastructure for performance, scalability, and reliability, ensuring it can handle large datasets and high-velocity data.
  • Improve Data Quality and Reliability : Identify and implement opportunities to enhance data reliability, efficiency, and quality through robust ETL processes and data monitoring systems.
  • Documentation and Compliance : Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation related to data infrastructure and processes, ensuring adherence to best practices for data security and compliance with regulatory frameworks.
  • Support Cloud Migration : Lead or support the migration of enterprise applications and databases to the cloud, ensuring seamless integration and enhancement of the existing data architecture.
  • Provide Technical Expertise : Act as the subject matter expert on data and databases, providing guidance and support during the planning and implementation phases of data projects.
  • Innovate and Stay Updated : Stay abreast of evolving technologies and industry trends, selecting and implementing appropriate tools and frameworks to avoid technical debt and ensure compatibility and efficiency. Focus on implementations that accommodates and optimise geospatial capabilities, IOTs, social media analytics, and AI.
  • Other Duties : Perform other duties as directed and authorized by the Coordinator – Data & Information, contributing to the overall success of the data initiatives.

ABOUT YOU

  • Relevant formal qualifications in information technology or suitable business orientated degree and/or equivalent industry experience gained by practical application over a minimum of 3 years
  • NSW Driving License Class C
  • Certifications in Microsoft technologies, ITIL or ITSM
  • Demonstrated experience in data engineering, involving the design, development, and maintenance of data infrastructure and systems. A solid background in managing large-scale data sets, including data collection, processing, storage, and retrieval.
  • Track record in designing and managing databases and data warehouses. Practical knowledge of data architecture, data modeling, and database design principles to create efficient and optimized data systems.
  • Hands-on experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, encompassing the deployment and management of data-related services on these platforms.
  • Experience in identifying and resolving bottlenecks in data systems, optimizing data pipelines, and improving overall data infrastructure performance and reliability.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, IT professionals, and business stakeholders. Experience in understanding and addressing diverse data requirements from different departments within a government context.
