About our team

National Operations | Operational Coordination & Planning | Technical Support To Operations | RPAS Operations

Technical Support to Operations, via RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) Operations, currently conducts activities utilising RPAS over land and littoral waters to enhance a range of ABF operations. The ABF Supervisor, RPAS Operations will contribute to:

  • Assisting in ABF RPAS capability strategic direction, planning and development to support future state as well as sustain current capability management and operational output via specialised ABF RPAS operations across the land and littoral domain. This is achieved by assisting in the application of a program management and capability lifecycle management approach.
  • Maintaining the Senior Remote Pilot (SRP) cohort for Home Affairs (incorporating the ABF). The function of the SRP is to support the Chief Remote Pilot (CRP) for assigned RPAS operations (land and littoral) and associated activities in accordance with the CASA regulations.
  • Being an ABF RPAS Quality, Safety and Assurance (QSA) Officer, with delegated responsibility for matters associated with QSA aspects of RPAS operations (land and littoral) as assigned by the CRP..

Our ideal candidate has the following:

  • Demonstrated experience in operating RPAS under a Remote Operator's Certificate,
  • Knowledge of (or willingness to develop) project and program management;
  • Knowledge of (or willingness to develop) commercial electronic technologies awareness, including wireless communications, computer operating systems, computer hardware and computer networks; willingness to be a Sworn ABF Officer subject to ABF Postings

Duties and responsibilities

Execution of Regulatory Functions:

  • Ensure that RPAS operations (land and littoral) (assigned by the CRP) are conducted in compliance with the Civil Aviation Act and the Regulations.

Sustain the existing ABF RPAS program:

  • Conducting RPAS operations (land and littoral)
  • Facilitating ABF work areas with attaining an RPAS capability
  • Ensuring RPAS operations (where delegated) are conducted in accordance with regulations
  • Enhancing governance and procedural frameworks
  • Regulatory and auditing compliance including training and certifications, represent the ABF as a SRP
  • Ability to work on-call, extended hours or outside business hours as operationally required, and undertake domestic and international travel.

Capability Development:

  • Assist in the application of the Capability Lifecycle Management Model (CLMM) for RPAS - Plan, Design, Invest and Acquire, Operate and Sustain.

Capability Analysis and Prioritisation:

  • Contribute to the development of capability plans for ABF RPAS, comprising investment options to develop and maintain capabilities within economic constraints, while suitable for modern-day challenges and circumstances.

Additional functions:

  • Support of ABF/TSO strategic engagements both domestically and internationally.

Role Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in operating RPAS on a commercial basis, preferably in law enforcement, government or a military context
  • Current accreditation via CASA, including holding a valid 25kg multirotor endorsement, and aviation radio qualification 'AROC'
  • Hold and maintain a valid State/Territory Driver license with no restrictions
  • Ability to hold and maintain ABF Use of Force Permit.

Desirable:

  • Experience as Chief or Senior Remote Pilot or similar role, including complex and/or law enforcement RPA operations
  • Holds, or has previously held a position as an 'RePL' instructor, training (in any category) up to 25kg RPA
  • Experience in the development of RPAS training capabilities within law enforcement agencies (RePL Training in accordance with the Part 101 MOS)
  • Prior experience in the use of RPAS flight management software for RPAS compliance
  • Proven experience in developing and executing RPAS strategy
  • Operational risk assessment and planning experience
  • Law enforcement experience
  • The ability and willingness to undertake all mandatory training requirements necessary to be sworn in as an ABF officer.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance, and:

  • ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
  • Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.

In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
