Primary objective
Contribute to the delivery of a culturally appropriate women’s health care service and the continuity of care of female
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their family members by providing a liaison service within the Katherine
Hospital. Establish and maintain rapport with female patients, offering support, and advocating on their behalf. Ensure female
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have access to information in relation to health services by providing a variety
of approached to information and education.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide culturally appropriate assistance, support and quality care for female Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
by providing a liaison service to assist patients and families during their hospitalisation.
2. Work closely with the multi-disciplinary teams (Doctors, Nurses/Aboriginal Health Practitioners, Physiotherapists, and
Allied Health Workers) and networking with government and non-government agencies.
3. Ensure accurate documentation of patients file notes and record keeping is maintained at a high level.
4. Participate in unit meetings, business planning, staff essential training and quality improvement activities.
5. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
6. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven ability to engage and interact effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and Health
Professionals from diverse cultures in remote and urban locations.
2. Proven knowledge and awareness of culture and cross cultural issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
women in today’s society in health and wellbeing.
3. Demonstrated high level of communication skills relating to liaising and advocating effectively with and on behalf of
female Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families in a culturally appropriate manner.
4. A demonstrated high standard of oral and written communication skills and experience in using Microsoft computer
programs and accessing databases.
5. The ability to work with the multi-disciplinary teams and to work as an effective team member.
6. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, determining priorities, meeting deadlines,
organising daily workloads, planning, organising and participating in staff education sessions and programmes.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of community services available in the Big Rivers Region.
