Primary objective
Provide timely and accurate coding of morbidity data for internal and external reporting activities in accordance with the
operational requirements of NT Health Service
Context statement
Efficient clinical coding requires thorough knowledge of the International Classification of Diseases/Australian Classification
of Healthcare Interventions (ICD/ACHI) and the ACS and reading clinical documentation. The Health Data and Classification
Service covers all the NT. This position assists the Coding Team Leader with effective clinical coding service delivery. Coding
Auditor/Educators will audit coding and provide coding education to coders and Clinical Documentation Improvement staff
as required.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assign accurate ICD-10-AM/ACHI classification codes, following the Australian Coding Standards (ACS) for inpatient
episodes to ensure optimum code assignment for Research and Activity Based Funding (ABF).
2. Communicate effectively with healthcare professionals and co-workers to achieve quality coded information.
3. Maintain ethical practice as per the Australian Coding Standards and adapt to change as required to deliver an effective
coding service to Alice Springs Hospital.
4. Optimise coding throughout and quality by participating in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and professional
development activities.
5. Assist with Clinical Coding tasks as required by the local Coding Team Manager.
6. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Completion of a recognised clinical coding course for ICD-10-AM
2. Hospital coding experience with ICD-10-AM/ACHI with proven ability to assign ICD-10-AM and ACHI codes accurately
and efficiently to hospital inpatient episodes according to the Australian Coding Standards.
3. Proven ability in the use of relevant Information Technology (IT) and computerised hospital information systems.
4. Proven ability to organise daily tasks, prioritise workload, work with minimum supervision, and refer problems when
necessary.
5. Demonstrated professional, effective communication with healthcare professionals and co-workers, a proven ability to
work as part of a team and an awareness of cross-cultural sensitivity.
6. Knowledge of the Australian Coding Standards, CQI activities and WHS Standards relevant to Clinical Coding.
7. An ability to interact with people from diverse cultures.

1. Additional Coding qualifications, which may include Coding Audit Certificate, Advanced Coding or similar
