What is the role?

The AFP are world leaders in forensic science and technical intelligence. Forensics is an essential enabler of frontline policing in both the physical and virtual criminal environments. The AFP Forensics area provide a foundation of innovation and collaborative problem solving, examining complex evidence, information and situations. By doing this, AFP Forensics provides solutions that keep pace with the criminal and national security environment.

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Team Member (Bands 4-6) within the AFP Forensic, Fingerprints Team. As a Team Member Fingerprints, you will contribute to the achievement of business, investigation and intelligence outcomes through the provision of specialist forensic (fingerprint) examinations, analysis and specialist technical skills.

You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

  • Ensuring outputs are achieved within the strategic direction of the AFP
  • Maintaining currency in fingerprint science expertise through ongoing professional development and learning opportunities
  • Laboratory and scene based Evidence recovery roles
  • The searching, comparison, and identification of fingerprints and the collection of fingerprints from deceased persons
  • Maintaining the national fingerprint database
  • Providing accurate, timely and impartial Forensic evidence to the courts
  • Providing a guiding, mentoring and advisory role to junior fingerprint trainees as required
  • Contributing to research and capability development projects
  • Providing accurate and professional technical advice to domestic and international agency partners
  • Performing other duties as required

Essential Requirements

  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
  • Formal qualifications (i.e. AFSAB and/or Graduate Certificate or equivalent) and/or contemporary experience related to the Fingerprint sciences.
  • A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively to achieve outcomes.

Additional Information

  • This position is an AFPBroadband 4-6 (Forensics)
  • This position has been advertised in multiple locations, however the role is located in Canberra, ACT. Successful applicants must be willing to relocate to Canberra.
  • Successful applicants need to be both flexible and mobile as well as able to deploy both nationally or internationally as required.
  • This role attracts a composite allowance in recognition of expanded working hours, normal patterns of attendance and shift patterns (such as afternoon shifts, weekends and Designated Public Holidays) that are required under the Operations working pattern. In accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement, an employee who is required to work in accordance with the Rostered Operations working pattern will receive a Core Composite of 22% in addition to their base salary, which will count as salary for superannuation. The Commissioner has the authority to remove a composite from a role.
