The About

Our client is a respected family-owned business based in Karratha, WA. They are seeking a Workshop Leading Hand. In this position, you will assist the Workshop Manager in the daily operations of their busy Heavy Diesel workshop. This is a key leadership role that offers both FIFO (8/6 roster) and residential opportunities. You’ll be based at their Karratha workshop but will also travel to various Pilbara mining and construction locations as required.

We are looking for an experienced Workshop Leading Hand to join our team and assist with managing the daily operations of a busy Heavy Diesel workshop in Karratha. This role offers:

The Tasks Ahead:

As the Workshop Leading Hand, you will work closely with the Workshop Manager to ensure smooth daily operations, overseeing a small team of tradespeople. Your duties will include:

  • Leading and supervising a small team of mechanics and tradesmen in a busy workshop.
  • Assisting in managing the day-to-day workshop operations, ensuring tasks are completed on time and to a high standard.
  • Ensuring that the team adheres to safety protocols and high standards of quality.
  • Maintaining effective communication between team members and the management team.
  • Managing time effectively to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines.
  • Providing guidance and support to tradesmen when troubleshooting complex mechanical issues.
  • Ensuring high standards of housekeeping and organisation within the workshop.

About You

You are a qualified and experienced Mobile Plant/Road Transport Diesel Mechanic with a solid track record of leading small teams in a workshop environment. You are skilled at managing day-to-day operations and have a customer-driven focus, always striving to deliver high-quality work. You’re a natural leader, with excellent time management, communication, and problem-solving skills. You are committed to maintaining high safety and housekeeping standards while providing support and guidance to your team.

Key Requirements
  • Qualified and experienced Mobile Plant/Road Transport Diesel Mechanic with relevant trade certificate.
  • Construction Card (essential).
  • Demonstrated experience leading small teams of tradesmen in a workshop environment.
  • Excellent time management and communication skills.
  • Customer-driven focus with a commitment to high-quality service.
  • 5+ years post-trade experience (essential).
  • Must hold full Australian working rights.
  • HR driver’s licence (essential).
  • Committed to maintaining high safety standards and workplace organization.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to pass police clearance, pre-employment medical, and drug screening.
