About the opportunity
The Section Manager Advisory will lead a team of approximately 4 lawyers and 2 professional support staff, responsible for providing advice on:
- public law, especially statutory interpretation matters involving aviation legislation;
- commercial law, especially in relation to procurement;
- information law, especially compliance with freedom of information and privacy obligations.
The role reports to the National Manager Legal Services and collaborates across CASA to identify and address legal risks. The preferred location is Canberra, with Brisbane and Sydney as secondary options, and Melbourne as third. Other locations may be considered if suitable candidates are not found in preferred locations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing legal advice on public law, commercial law, aviation law, and information law;
- Maintaining CASA’s legal policies and procedures;
- Ensuring high-quality legal work products;
- Mentoring legal staff;
- Managing CASA’s freedom of information and privacy functions;
- Ensuring compliance with information law obligations;
- Developing and delivering legal training;
- Promoting workplace safety, diversity, and inclusivity;
- Supporting a positive health and safety culture and psychosocial wellbeing.
The salary range is $131,860 - $232,691, with actual offers expected to be below $190,000 depending on experience.

Candidates should demonstrate:
- Strong experience in public law and statutory interpretation, preferably in aviation legislation;
- Experience or ability to quickly acquire knowledge in areas such as aviation law, procurement, and information law;
- Management capabilities and ability to lead across dispersed teams;
- Sound judgement in complex and sensitive situations;
- Leadership, organizational, and time management skills;
- Ability to engage respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees;
- Commitment to workplace safety, equity, and diversity.
