About the role
Destination NSW is seeking an experienced and motivated Project Manager, World Cups and Major Sport Events to lead the coordination and delivery of NSW Government investment in major international sporting events, including the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026, Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027, Netball World Cup 2027, and other significant events as required.
This important role will be responsible for managing Host City Agreements and contractual relationships with National Sporting Organisations and Local Organising Committees, ensuring all operational, marketing, and financial commitments/obligations are delivered in line with NSW Government objectives.
The Project Manager, World Cups and Major Sport Events will play a critical leadership role in coordinating cross-agency collaboration, establishing event-specific working groups, and managing stakeholder engagement across all levels of government, including Federal, State and Local Government. You will oversee end-to-end project delivery, including planning, implementation, reporting, and post-event evaluation. A key focus will be the successful delivery of host city activation projects, including the Rugby World Cup 2027 ‘Fan Village’ in an iconic Sydney location, along with city dressing and marketing campaigns in partnership with the Destination NSW marketing division.
You will be responsible for managing complex event budgets and milestone payments, leading inter-agency and stakeholder working groups, and facilitating and obtaining event sanctions and landowner approvals as required. About You
You are a senior event management professional with strong event delivery experience and a demonstrated understanding of the international sporting landscape and the major events industry. You will bring proven experience in leading the delivery of (large-scale) event activation projects, with a focus on contract management, stakeholder engagement, government coordination, and budget oversight and administration.
You’ll have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of partners, including event organisers, National Sporting Organisations, government agencies, and venue operators, while delivering innovative, high-impact outcomes in fast-paced, high-pressure environments.
You thrive on managing important projects, competing priorities and tight deadlines, using your strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and negotiation skills to navigate challenges with confidence.
With excellent communication and interpersonal skills, you are confident leading multi-agency working groups and facilitating alignment across diverse stakeholder groups. You’re comfortable operating in dynamic environments, and you bring a proactive, solutions-focused mindset to everything you do.
