About the Role

The Leading Orchard Hand is responsible for operating orchard equipment used to develop the walnut and almond crop and the orchard in general. The Leading Orchard Hand will at times supervise other staff as they carry out their duties. Reporting to the Orchard Manager, the role is varied and requires someone who understands the wide-ranging and changing environment of a large-scale orchard.

Duties include but not limited to

  • Operating tractors, trucks and other types of motorised equipment used in activities such as weed spraying, airblast spraying, mulching, sweeping, harvesting, etc.
  • Carry out the required daily maintenance procedures on equipment.
  • Implement orchard machinery work as directed by the Orchard Manager, such as: spray programs, harvesting, etc.
  • Select, adjust and operate the equipment to match the needs of each job.
  • Instruct, train and assist other employees assigned to operate equipment and perform orchard tasks.
  • Performing other work assignments on the orchard as required such as general orchard maintenance and clean up, irrigating, fertilising, pruning, supervising/training workers, and workshop activities.

Essential Criteria, Skills and Experience

  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Basic understanding of horticulture production, spraying, harvesting, irrigation, fertiliser, pests, and fungus etc.
  • Capable of performing the necessary adjustments, initial set up and in field changes on all equipment being operated.
  • Knowledge and skills in preventative maintenance and small repairs is desirable

What You Should Know About Our Operations

Our business is widespread, growing walnuts and almonds in the Riverina Region in New South Wales, pecans in Moree and macadamias, avocados, mangoes and lemons in Bundaberg, Queensland. In addition to fruit and nut growing, we also operate apiaries located in Temora, Nowra and Dubbo.

Off the paddock, we operate nut processing and packing facilities in Leeton, Toowoomba and Bundaberg as well as fruit packing and processing in Bundaberg. In addition, our shared services teams (Finance, Sales, ESG, Safety and People & Culture) are located across all of our sites as well as the Brisbane, Melbourne and Griffith offices.
