Fisheries and Aquaculture is a Division of PIRSA, responsible for the ecological sustainable management and development of South Australia’s aquatic resources. This includes the effective day to day management, administration of leasing and licensing of fisheries and aquaculture, driving policy development and changes and delivery of education and compliance activities.

Reporting to the Executive Director Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Director Operations is responsible in supporting the Executive Director to oversee the administration and enforcement of the Aquaculture Act 2001 and the Fisheries Management Act 2007 , with a focus on the management and development of sustainable fisheries resources and aquatic farming and a range of industry Cost Recovery frameworks.

The Director Operations leads the operational branch of the Division and has responsibility for providing direction and leadership to operational and technical staff and volunteers working across the following:

  • Regional and Offshore Compliance Operations.
  • Intelligence and Strategic Investigations.
  • Prosecutions.
  • Aboriginal Fisheries Officer Career Pathway Program.
  • Fishcare Volunteer Program.

The position is responsible for providing high level advice and support to the Executive Director, Fisheries and Aquaculture, to address a range of challenges for the seafood industry, both nationally and in South Australia. These include:

  • The equitable allocation and management of commonly owned resources.
  • The uptake of digital technologies to improve business and operational efficiencies.
  • Maintaining sustainable development of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors; and
  • Increasing recognition of market access pressures on, and within, the industry.

You will play an integral role in delivering the agency’s priorities including development and delivery of strategic priorities that align with the State and PIRSA Strategic and Corporate Plans and are consistent with state and national legislation and develops and fosters collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders at national, regional and local levels, including industry and other government departments and PIRSA divisions.

You will be a collaborative leader with an ability to foster respectful working relationships with all key stakeholders within PIRSA, government and the private sector and have experience in responding to and providing high level advice on complex and politically sensitive issues.
