Volunteer - Community Cook

North Carlton Railway Neighbourhood House (Railway House)
Balwyn North Full-day Full-time

Description:

Share your love of cooking and connect with your community

ROLE OBJECTIVE

Railway House runs alternating Cooking Together and Community Lunch sessions each Wednesday, as part of our Food in Common program.

Volunteer guest cooks assist us to facilitate a group cooking session that involves participants in the preparation, cooking and eating of a delicious and nutritious dish of choice (for example, something simple that they cook often, and may have meaning to their family or culture), that is also relatively affordable, and/or draws on Railway Garden produce where possible.

KEY TASKS

  • Select a dish to be cooked with the group, and discuss with the Community Engagement worker
  • The chosen dish will be able to be scaled to larger quantities and cooked in a group of about 10-15 people (this varies depending on the session)
  • Purchase ingredients the day or morning before the class (or ideally source from Railway Garden where possible – participants may do a garden walk together to harvest)
  • Ensure that there are enough food preparation jobs to be shared among diverse group members with different abilities
  • Ensure that the dish is suitable for cooking in our small kitchen, and/or with the use of additional portable camp stoves or outdoor bbqs
  • Demonstrate and explain the use of seasonal, nutritious and affordable ingredients where possible.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • As part of the background screening checks, North Carlton Railway Neighbourhood House expects that all volunteers undertake Police Checks (and Working with Children checks where the role involves children) and will follow the policies and procedures outlined in the Child Safety Policy.

KEY ATTRIBUTES

  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills and ability to build good rapport with a diverse range of people with different life experiences and abilities.
  • Ability to create an inclusive and empowering environment and facilitate opportunities for participation.
