The Opportunity

Our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility is looking for a Corrosion Technologist in our Product Innovation & Technology team based in NSW. As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.

In this essential role, you will support BlueScope’s renowned product brands including COLORBOND® steel, ZINCALUME® steel and TRUECORE® steel, through continuous technical guidance and support. This hands-on role will assist in assessing and evaluating the corrosion durability of new and existing coated steel products and building knowledge of product performance in existing and new applications. In this role you will gain exposure to, and experience across, a mix of business functions including technical, operational, project, administrative, and systems, plus engage with all coating businesses across BlueScope’s global footprint.

Your technical knowledge will enable you to provide valuable contributions to the delivery of continuous optimization and innovative solutions for our products in order to support our customers and internal stakeholders now and into the future.

What Will You Do?

Through testing and evaluation, you will identify opportunities to enhance the value proposition of our coated steel products. You will also be responsible for:

  • assessing and forecasting the corrosion performance of coated steel products
  • undertaking scientific investigations and associated laboratory experimental work to provide the data and knowledge necessary to make and review product recommendations
  • provide material specifications for coated products to achieve desired durability criteria for building, construction and manufacturing applications
  • assist with the inspection of coated products in real-world applications, and ensure accelerated and exposure test programs are consistent with real-world performance
  • supporting team members to deliver BlueScope Innovation projects on time and on budget

More About You

Along with your passion and commitment to safety and your technical expertise, you will bring a highly consultative nature to the role. You will also bring:

  • knowledge of laboratory operation, systems and documentation including safety and quality control
  • experience in designing and executing experiments, and documenting your findings
  • a technical acumen with the ability to translate technical information into value-add business outcomes
  • the ability to present and communicate your results and participate in reviews and constructive debates with your peers
  • exposure or knowledge to some of the following - real-world and/or accelerated corrosion of any alloy (in any application), electrochemistry, metallographic analysis, metallic-coated steel, or pre-painted products
  • the capability to perform multiple tasks requiring high levels of attention
  • professional qualifications at graduate level in Materials Science/Engineering or an equivalent field
