The Role
The Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessel Project (SEA1180-1) is a foundational project within the continuous naval shipbuilding enterprise that successive governments have committed to. The Project Director leads the delivery of six Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) under construction by Luerssen Australia, and the associated support system.
The role involves:
- Lead the delivery of the Arafura Class OPV.
- Oversee the project management function in Canberra and Henderson Western Australia, and work closely with the technical and business functions of the OPV Branch to achieve results.
- Lead engagement with the Prime contractor and other materiel delivery contractors.
- Work closely with stakeholders including the Naval Construction Branch within the Naval Shipbuilding & Sustainment Group (NSSG), Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Sponsor, the sustainment organisation, and in the broader continuous naval shipbuilding enterprise.
- Undertake planning with, and reporting to, senior Defence executives and Government. This includes annual reporting for the Major Projects Report, regular ministerial submissions, and a range of weekly and monthly reporting.
About our Team
The OPV Branch in the NSSG is delivering the OPV Project and other requirements as periodically assigned. The primary role of the OPVs is maritime patrol and response operations in support of the National Civil Surveillance Program in order to contribute to protecting Australia's territory, territorial seas, and Economic Exclusion Zone. The Branch consists of mostly APS employees, with individuals based in Canberra and around the country.

- The successful candidate will be driving improvement that will propel the growth of the shipbuilding industrial landscape at the Henderson shipyard, and building up capability within Defence to manage complex projects both now and into the future.
- The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader who is diligent, has a positive attitude, particularly towards respecting diversity of ideas and empathetic of the perspectives of others.
- A strong track record in leading teams through change is vital.
- Experience in project management and leading teams through significant schedule and delivery challenges would be highly regarded.
- Expertise in working with teams in multiple locations and managing stakeholders across Defence, and either project management qualifications or the ability and willingness to obtain project management qualifications while in the role.
