Classification: SHADS Award [MA000100] Level 3 - 4 ($37.35 - $46.35 p/h) - dependent on level of prior experience.

  • Part time, initially 2-3 days per week with scope to increase to Full Time as required.
  • Occasional travel within Queensland is required, including remote travel.
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons are strongly encouraged to apply.

As per award and based on experience.

Location

Anywhere within Queensland. This position is remote/work from home with occasional travel required. Locations outside Queensland may be considered for the right person.

About the Alliance

The Lake Eyre Basin Traditional Owner Alliance (the Alliance) is a coalition of Traditional Owners of the Lake Eyre Basin region of Queensland, Australia. The Alliance represents the interests of and advocates for the rights of Traditional Owner groups concerning water and land management decisions, cultural heritage, and environmental conservation in the Lake Eyre Basin region. The Alliance exists to ensure that Traditional Owners have a meaningful role in managing and protecting their ancestral lands and waterways within the Lake Eyre Basin. The Alliance played a key leadership role in securing safeguards to protect the Lake Eyre Basin’s free flowing rivers and Channel Country floodplains in Queensland.

The Alliance is currently made up of representative members from First Nations across the Lake Eyre Basin with an informal managing committee of 4 executive members. The full membership of the Alliance meets on average 2 times per year, and the executive members meeting more regularly as needed. Following discussions in 2024, the Alliance is now seeking to formalise its organisational structure, membership, processes, and activities and is seeking a suitable coordinator to assist in this aim.

About the Role

The Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the establishment and coordination of key priorities of the Lake Eyre Basin Traditional Owner Alliance, with a particular focus on developing an effective governance and decision-making model.

In the initial stages, the Coordinator will bring together relevant expertise and resources to support the LEB TOA in designing and implementing this governance structure. This presents an exciting opportunity the coordinator to be a part of building a unique First Nations led and controlled organisation advocating for greater representation in land and water decision making and management.

The coordinator role oversees the administrative functions of the Alliance, including coordinating ordinary and executive member meetings, meeting and event planning and logistics.

Key Responsibilities

Project management:

  • Coordinate the development of a governance and decision-making model for the Alliance pulling together Alliance members, external expertise, resources to assist the executive in making informed decisions.
  • Assisting with the planning and organising of online and in person meetings, including travel and venue bookings.
  • Assisting with the development of meeting agendas and materials.
  • Manage and deliver all reporting and funding requirements

Executive and administrative assistance:

  • Provide administrative support to Executive and general members, including preparing reports, documents, and presentations.
  • Maintain accurate financial records aligned to the approved budget.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Serve as the main point of contact for internal and external communications.
  • Provide regular updates to broader Alliance members and assist to grow the membership base
  • Assist the executive to identify and maintain relationships with partners

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experienced in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities including a demonstrated high level of cross-cultural competency.
  • Prior experience in a coordination and/or administration role for a community group or other incorporated association will be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and strengthening partnerships and stakeholder engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organise large meetings and events, including managing budgets and logistics.
  • A demonstrated capacity to network in a complex stakeholder environment in a strategic manner.
  • High level operational and time management skills with ‘can do’ attitude to initiate, progress and complete strategic tasks using technology (Word, Excel, Outlook, MS Teams).
  • Strong inter-personal and communication skills for building and maintaining relationships and identifying potential issues.
  • The ability to work independently and in a team environment and demonstrated flexibility in achieving outcomes.
