Senior Solicitor – Trial Division
As a Senior Solicitor, you'll be responsible for managing complex and serious matters—ranging from committal stage through to trial—including major criminal trials and taskforce-led prosecutions. You will instruct Counsel, appear where appropriate, and provide high-level advice to police, prosecutors, and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). You'll be part of a fast-paced, agile team committed to continuous improvement and delivering fair, timely justice.
About the Role:
As a Senior Solicitor, you will:
- Prepare and manage large and complex criminal matters for early resolution or trial, ensuring expert legal strategy and presentation in court
- Provide clear and timely legal advice to internal and external stakeholders, including Police, Counsel, Crown Prosecutors, and the DPP
- Mentor junior solicitors and contribute to a collaborative, innovative team culture within a dynamic legal environment
The position is Melbourne based, however occasional regional travel may be a requirement of the position. A vehicle and overnight accommodation are provided as required.
We have two positions available: one ongoing and one fixed term (8 months).
About you:
As a highly capable criminal law solicitor with a strong working knowledge of criminal procedure, evidence, and relevant legislation, you will;
- Demonstrate the ability to prepare and/or appear in large and complex criminal matters, and perform high-level legal research on complex issues under tight time constraints.
- Bring experience in mentoring and guiding junior staff, fostering their professional development.
- Showcase your ability to negotiate and influence decision-making to achieve outcomes aligned with the OPP's objectives.
- Possess exceptional interpersonal skills, enabling you to liaise effectively with OPP staff, Crown Prosecutors, complainants, witnesses, police, counsel, and the public.
