About This Opportunity

The Technical/Scientific Officer will provide essential scientific and technical support for the School of the Environment’s undergraduate teaching program, which includes practical laboratory and field classes in environmental science, biology, earth science, physical geography, and molecular biology. A background or strong interest in organismal biology or earth science is preferred.

Key responsibilities include preparing practical laboratory classes, assisting in the development of new practical activities, maintaining laboratory facilities, and supporting teaching staff with technology, instruments, audiovisual equipment, and computer systems used in both laboratory and field settings.

The role may involve participation in overnight field teaching courses and occasional work outside standard hours. Holidays are expected to be taken outside of teaching semesters (February to May and July to October). The successful appointee will play a key role in supporting high-quality educational outcomes for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the School of the Environment.

This role sits inside a dynamic, collaborative team and offers diverse, hands-on work.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Liaise with academic staff to determine requirements for the preparation and conduct of practical classes

  • Prepare chemicals, reagents, equipment, instruments, demonstrations and any other materials needed to support practical classes

  • Closely support the laboratory practicals on a daily basis including on the spot troubleshooting of experiments and equipment

  • Provide technical support to academic staff in the development and testing of new practicals in a blended learning environment (ie, both in-person and online delivery modes)

  • Participate in tutor training for practicals, including safety aspects and experimental procedures

  • Maintain comprehensive preparation/set-up notes and instructions for self and others to use

  • Assist with distribution, handling and administration of teaching related materials such as practical notes and examination papers

  • Assist with preparations for and participate in the outreach activities, information sessions and workshops for schools and other external organisations

About You

  • Completion of a degree level qualification in Science majoring in environmental science, biology, earth science, physical geography or molecular biology; or completion of a Diploma with relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training. Strong background/interest in organismal biology or earth science preferred.

  • Experience of working in a scientific role in a teaching environment at a tertiary institution .

  • Excellent practical skills and experience in relevant methodologies or techniques required for innovative teaching support.

  • Experience using specialist equipment relevant to teaching in The School of the Environment.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues

  • Ability to work independently on routine procedures

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Well-organised, methodical and self-motivated

Previous experience in a similar role would be considered favourably.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, and may require some vaccinations.
