Senior Pasture Hand - Unique Picturesque Location - Robbins Island, Tasmania

Drover Ag Recruitment
Hobart Full-day Full-time

Description:

The Employer :
Robbins Island, located on the northwestern tip of Tasmania, offers a temperate climate, clean air, and a pristine coastal environment. The Hammond family, who are fourth-generation cattle farmers, have been breeding Wagyu cattle on the island since the early 1990s. Their beef features marble scores ranging from 7-8 and 9+. This unique flavour profile results from a combination of specific Wagyu genetics, the island's unspoiled environment, and a specialised grain diet designed to mimic the local flora of Robbins Island.
It is one of Australia’s most iconic properties, encompassing a 200-hectare mainland area and two islands: Robbins Island (10,000 hectares) featuring 2,000 hectares of improved pasture and Walker Island (700 hectares) dedicated to native foraging.
Their operation includes a herd of 1,600 purebred Wagyu breeders, where they raise all progeny to 400 kilograms before custom-feeding them at a feedlot for processing through Greenham Tasmania, marketing under the prestigious Robbins Island – Tasmanian Wagyu brand. They ensure full traceability of cattle, even photographing each carcass using advanced technology. As a family-run business, they are passionate about delivering world-class beef.
The Role:
As a senior pasture hand, you will be responsible for independently managing the rotational grazing of all livestock groups on the property, including cow/calf groups and young stock from weaning until they reach feedlot age. Your focus will be on optimising pasture utilisation through rotational grazing and feed budgeting.
Key tasks will include shifting cattle every day and monitoring closely for illness, plate metering, monitoring the leaf stage of the grass, and conducting feed budgets to ensure optimal pasture use. You will receive training for these responsibilities and will often work independently. It is essential that you perform all tasks correctly to maintain animal health, including cleaning troughs, splitting paddocks, moving livestock, feeding mineral licks, and planning grazing rotations. Depending on skill level you will work as a secondary manager under the Operations Manager, while also collaborating closely with the cattle team. If skill level isn’t high enough to be a manager straight away; procedures are in place for you to be given more assistance and work your way into a management position.
Most of your work will be conducted on Robbins Island, which will require you to take a boat to work daily. This position also demands problem-solving skills and flexibility, as you will be working in an isolated environment.
The Offer
The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary and periodic grass-fed Wagyu meat deliveries. Ideally, candidates should be based in Smithton, 20 km from the daily boat launch. A rental house may be included in the package upon negotiation.
Smithton offers essential services to the local farming community of about 10,000 people. The area features beautiful beaches, including 7 Mile Beach and award-winning Stanley, as well as excellent fishing and diving opportunities along the coast.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a dedicated long-term employee who approaches each workday with a positive attitude and a genuine passion for farming practices and animal care. Additionally, possess the following attributes:
  • Previous experience with cattle or pasture management
  • Possess strong communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail and take pride in their work
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate effectively in a team environment
  • Willingness to learn and grow within the business with the appropriate training provided
Register your interest
If you feel that you’re the right fit for this position, please submit an up-to-date resume along with the contact details of 3 references. Preference will be given to those who supply a cover letter addressing their suitability - that is, tell us what you love about the role and how you think you’re the right fit.
