About the role

As a Senior Construction Underwriter, you are a key member of the Construction Team working within the Risk, Insurance and Claims Solutions Division. You use your understanding of VMIA client needs and relevant industry experience to provide specialist advice and exercise sound judgement regarding the provision of effective products and service solutions across the Construction portfolio.

This is an exciting, ongoing opportunity for a leader to collaborate with key stakeholders across the business.

Key responsibilities

  • Build and maintain specialised and expert knowledge in Construction insurance including product and underwriting practice, wider insurance market offerings and recent legal developments
  • Support the Head of Construction to ensure the availability of a contemporary, best practice product suite that meets the insurance needs across VMIA's entire client base
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge across various contract delivery models, including Public Private Partnerships (PPPs), design and construct, incentivised and collaborative contracting models including alliances.
  • Engage with leaders and other team members in the Construction Team to shape the insurance strategy strategically and proactively for our clients including for our State's major infrastructure projects.
  • Work with other team members across a portfolio of clients involved in building the State's infrastructure and will attend client meetings as requested to provide accurate and timely advice
  • Lead as required, the delivery of strategy and programs for our clients including the State's major infrastructure projects.
  • Protect the client, product, and program integrity by ensuring the currency and accuracy of policy information is maintained within VMIA systems.
  • Develop relationships and networks across the insurance sectors including public and private industry to ensure currency of knowledge, information, expertise, and practice in the VMIA
  • Collate and analyse reports for the routine monitoring of portfolio development, corporate reporting and to inform decision making
  • Collect, maintain and provide recommendations based on underwriting data, data reports within VMIA systems.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of insurance related client training programs or presentations at the VMIA or client premises

Who you work with

  • VMIA Clients – you provide a professional standard of service and support to VMIA clients through timely advice and response to all queries as well as policy coverage and endorsements.
  • Construction team colleagues – you work collaboratively to build, develop, and continuously improve the VMIA construction insurance solutions.
  • Pricing and Capital Management– you work collaboratively with members of this team to set premiums and to develop pricing for products within the various major construction projects.
  • Claims Team – you work collaboratively with claims colleagues to ensure construction claims are settled in a fair and reasonable manner and agree on reporting procedures.

What we are looking for

  • You have demonstrated experience working within the broking, underwriting or other relevant area of insurance
  • Min 10 years experience in broking or insurance underwriting and a strong working knowledge of general insurance
  • Have sound working knowledge and understanding of market, coverage, policy terms and conditions and exclusions of commercial insurance products is highly desirable
  • Good knowledge of the reinsurance market, including program structures and how to achieve value for money outcomes
  • Have a professional service approach, with demonstrated commercial acumen and skills in data and business analysis
  • You have professional networks with personnel across insurance sectors, public and private industry to build and contribute to the knowledge, information, skills, and practice at VMIA

Qualifications

  • You hold or are working towards tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or Insurance professional qualifications is highly desirable
  • You hold membership with ANZIIF, or equivalent body is highly desirable
  • You are governed by the fit and proper person as per APRA guidelines, i.e. not listed on the disqualified persons register (Insurance ACT section 25(A) 1) and is not convicted of a criminal offence or bankrupt.

Salary Information

At VMIA, we offer competitive salaries based on the role's classification and your skills and experience. Typically, new employees start at the minimum of the salary range, however, consideration may be given to starting above the minimum of the band should you demonstrate extensive experience in a similar role or possess unique and desirable skills and capabilities required to perform the role.
