About the Role
We are establishing a 12-month casual pool for passionate and skilled Medical Consultants to join Central Adelaide Local Health Network’s (CALHN) Integrated Care division. Successful applicants may be offered casual opportunities to support services such as Hospital in the Home (HITH) or broader Integrated Care programs, depending on service needs and candidate suitability. This is an exciting opportunity to work flexibly across innovative models of care that are transforming how health services are delivered to the South Australian community.
Central Adelaide Local Health Network’s Integrated Care division provides vital services aimed at reducing hospital admissions, shortening acute hospital stays, and bridging the gap between acute hospitals and community-based care — with a strong focus on patient-centred, timely, and safe clinical interventions.
As a Medical Consultant in Hospital in the Home (HITH), you will deliver acute, inpatient-equivalent care to patients within their homes or preferred non-hospital settings. Utilising hospital-grade technologies, medications, and safety and quality standards, you will work collaboratively with emergency departments, acute and sub-acute services, community providers, and virtual care platforms. You will manage patients requiring rapid, time-limited interventions, supporting hospital avoidance strategies and ensuring patients receive the right care in the right place. Hospital in the Home operates seven days a week, including public holidays, and involves participation in a remote on-call roster.
As a Medical Consultant in Integrated Care more broadly, you will provide rapid assessment, clinical advice, virtual care, and short-term interventions to support early discharge from hospital, avoid unnecessary presentations, and deliver care that bridges the gap between primary and tertiary settings. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to direct patient care, clinical teaching, continuous quality improvement, and the development of innovative community-based service models.
Both roles offer rewarding opportunities to contribute to the evolution of contemporary healthcare delivery, supporting patients to achieve better outcomes while strengthening the efficiency of the broader health system.
About You
You are a highly skilled and passionate medical professional who thrives in complex healthcare environments, with a strong focus on leadership, clinical excellence, and delivering innovative patient-centred care.
-
You hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent, with Specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia, and bring a strong foundation of clinical and leadership expertise.
-
You demonstrate excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and organisational skills, with proven ability to lead change, foster collaboration, and drive improvements in patient safety, quality, and clinical risk management.
-
You have extensive experience supporting hospital avoidance strategies, teaching and mentoring junior staff, and contributing to service improvement initiatives across acute and community care settings.
-
You possess comprehensive knowledge of patient safety principles, accreditation processes, leadership practices, research methodologies, and the legal and ethical frameworks underpinning contemporary clinical practice.
