South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) is seeking an Aboriginal Population Health Trainee to join our team and support culturally responsive public health strategies that address chronic disease and other key health challenges in our Aboriginal communities.

This role supports:

  • The development and delivery of effective, evidence-based population health programs for the southwestern Sydney community.
  • NSW Health’s commitment to Closing the Gap in Indigenous health outcomes through the five priority areas outlined in the NSW Implementation Plan.

As a trainee, you’ll rotate through a variety of placements within Population Health and Aboriginal Health while completing your MPH, gaining practical experience in surveillance, community engagement, policy development, program implementation, and more.

What You'll Be Doing
The role of the Aboriginal Population Health Trainee is to:

  • Support the capacity of the South Western Sydney Local Health District to mount effective preventive health strategies to address chronic diseases within the Aboriginal population in NSW.
  • Develop the surge capacity of Aboriginal public health practitioners within the District who are able to support a culturally appropriate response to a variety of public health risks.
  • Contribute to NSW Health’s commitment to Closing the Gap in Indigenous Health and in particular to the five priority areas described in the NSW Implementation Plan.

  1. Applicants must have successfully completed a recognised undergraduate degree and be able to meet the admission requirements for the postgraduate degree of Master of Public Health (MPH) at a university in Australia. Confirmation of university acceptance into an MPH is required for appointment.
  2. Please describe your connection to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community, and how your cultural knowledge and lived experience would contribute to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal people through this trainee role.
  3. Outline how your previous education and/or work experience has prepared you to undertake a Master of Public Health degree, and how you will balance the academic and practical requirements of this traineeship.
  4. Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
