Flinders Medical Centre is a 580 bed public hospital, which is an international leader in integrated patient care, teaching, research and health promotion. Situated 13km south of the Adelaide City Centre, it is on the same campus as the Flinders University of South Australia. Flinders Medical Centre has close working relationships with the Noarlunga Health Services and the Flinders Private Hospital.


About the role:

As the Registrar you will take part in inpatient care, quality assurance, teaching and research in Critical Care Medicine in southern Adelaide in particular at Flinders Medical Centre and elsewhere as specified by the Unit Head and the Director, Division of Medicine, Cardiac and Critical Care Services.

The services provided by the Department of Critical Care Medicine include:

  • Acute in-patient care - 32 bed Critical Care Unit - ECMO centre - C24 CICM unit
  • Outreach and Medical Emergency Team (MET) – response & training
  • Plasmapheresis
  • Total Parenteral Nutrition - both within FMC and “at home”.

Supporting these patient services is a comprehensive research and education program. Both the patient and support services within the Department are managed utilising a multi-disciplinary approach.

The Registrar who works under supervision is responsible to the Head of Unit who is accountable to the Director, Division of Medicine, Cardiac & Critical Care Services to manage and coordinate the provision of inpatient and outpatient care in Critical Care at the Flinders Medical Centre and in southern metropolitan Adelaide.

Please note: As per the SMOEA 2022, the total term of employment with SA Health will be 3 years. Rotations following the initial 12-month allocation as ICU Registrar will be determined in line with your training and SA Health’s requirements. This may include transfer to other SA Health locations to perform work appropriate to classification, skills and capabilities.

About you:

  • Bachelor of Medicine: Bachelor of Surgery (MBSS) or equivalent.
  • Registrable with Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner.
  • Registered with CICM as ICM trainee, if applying for trainee position.
  • Effective communication skills both written and oral.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Proven level of skills to enable work in Critical Care.
  • Supervisory skills in regard to staff.
  • Experience to include clinical work in the specialty, teaching and research.
  • Experience in MET (Medical Emergency Team).
  • ICU and/or Anaesthesia experience with airway competence

CICM trainee applications for Basic, Advance and Transition year (TY) will be assessed based on progress in the training program. Examples of factors that reflect training progress are – time in training program, status of part 1 and 2 exams, experience outside intensive care such as anaesthetic time, status of research project and number of publications in peer reviewed journals. The CICM Transition year training position of 12 months will have mandatory non-clinical fraction which will range from 0.2 FTE to 0.5 FTE. This partition will depend upon whether candidate wish to experience general consultant practice or focus on domains of research, teaching, or echocardiography. Irrespective of domain, all transition year fellows would be required to engage in one of the several safety and quality standards within ICU and engage in various administrative roles. CICM trainee Applicants are requested to mention their training status, the role they are applying for – Basic, Advance or Transition year and their plans for the next two years. The TY year applications should provide expression of interest towards one of the four paths – general, echocardiography, research and teaching.

Service registrar: Assessment will include factors such as ICU and anaesthetic experience, exposure to Australian intensive care setup, active CPD relevant to acute care, procedural experience relevant to ICU and publications. CICM trainees with deferred training time may also be considered for this position. Service registrars will have relatively greater exposure of ICU outreach services within hospital.
