Your opportunity

As a Standards Laboratory Technician, you work as part of a highly specialised team dedicated to delivering high precision calibration services for our field teams and external customers. EQL’s Instrument and Standards Laboratory operates as a NATA accredited reference calibration lab, setting the benchmark for precision with an industry-leading facility that ensures quality, traceable measurements and equipment safety across the entire energy network.

Day to day, you focus on performing high-precision calibrations, ensuring the accuracy of instruments that keep our energy network running smoothly. From fine tuning calibrating reference standards to verifying measurement equipment, you handle some of the most technically complex calibrations in the industry.

Here’s how you’ll do it:

  • Calibrating high-precision electrical, temperature, humidity and frequency reference instruments to exacting standards and internationally accepted methodologies.
  • Developing and automating calibration processes, using proprietary Fluke metrology software, along with coding languages such as C++ and VBA, to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Reviewing and critically analysing calibration results, ensuring they comply with accreditation standards.
  • Investigating and solving intricate measurement challenges, troubleshooting faults, and refining procedures to comply with industry-leading standards.
  • Providing expert advice to field teams and external customers, clearly explaining technical calibration processes and results.
  • Issuing formal calibration reports and legal verification certificates as an Authorised Signatory.
  • Mentoring and supporting colleagues, sharing your expertise to strengthen the team’s capabilities and improve laboratory processes.

Your role is built on technical expertise, but it’s equally about continuous learning, innovation, and collaboration. Whether you’re refining automation programs, enhancing calibration accuracy, or ensuring compliance with national and international standards, you’re key in upholding EQL’s commitment to quality and precision.

The remuneration for your new role is:

  • From $159,651 to $169,514 per annum + 14.75% superannuation (9-day fortnight).
  • From $180,406 to $191,550 per annum + 14.75% superannuation (10-day fortnight).

The level of payment will be subject to an assessment of the successful applicant’s knowledge, skills and competencies that are required in this position.

What you’ll bring:

You’re a technically minded problem-solver with a background in electronics , instrumentation , or automation , and you thrive in an environment where precision and accuracy are key .

Specifically, we’re looking for:

  • An Advanced Diploma in Electrical or Electronic Engineering (or equivalent).
  • A Queensland Restricted Electrical Work Licence (or the ability to obtain one).
  • Experience in electronics, fault-finding, and diagnostics, with a solid understanding of and experience in calibration methodologies within the fields of electrical, temperature, humidity, and frequency/time interval.
  • Programming skills (Fluke MET/CAL and MET/TEAM, C++, VBA, LabVIEW, or similar), with the ability to automate calibration processes.
  • A strong understanding of quality standards (AS/ISO/IEC-17025 and ISO 9001), with a quality focus and commitment to following procedures to ensure compliance.
  • The ability to work in a team, solving problems collaboratively, supporting each other through effective communication and respectful interactions.
  • Highly developed communication skillset and a strong customer focus with the ability to communicate well with a range of different customer types.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.

Formal metrology training is advantageous but not essential. Experience in conducting temperature and humidity calibrations will be highly regarded. If you have the right technical foundation and a willingness to learn, we’ll support you in developing the specialist skills required for this role.
