Your Opportunity

As the Health and Safety Business Partner (Maritime) you will be responsible for:

  • Lead by example in living our value of Safety First.
  • Be responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of workplace health and safety programs and initiates across the TAFE Qld North region;
  • Provide advice and education on WHS regulations, risk management, and best practices to ensure a safe and compliant work and training environment.
  • Provide specialist WHS support tailored to maritime operations to support the safe delivery of the Pacific Maritime Training Services (PMTS) program
  • Support the training of staff and management to promote awareness and foster a learning culture.

This position reports to the Senior Health and Safety Business Partner

This is a Temporary, Full-Time opportunity, to 23 June 2026 with possibility of extension unless otherwise determined.

The position will be based primarily at Cairns however you may be required to perform work at other TAFE Queensland campuses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the success of cultural change within the organisation through promoting and modelling TAFE Queensland values of Safety first, Working together, Focussing on our customer, Showing initiative and Taking responsibility.
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge, and understanding, of the legislative frameworks relating to WHSE; applying this knowledge operationally and provide ongoing updates, support and advice to all staff
  • Proactive involvement in the improvement of workplace health, safety, wellness and environmental issues through early identification and utilisation of opportunities for continuous improvement of safety practices and culture.
  • Develop, implement and assist with WHS audit programs, reporting outcomes, trends, risks and report issues to Senior Executive and staff consultative forums.
  • Participate in investigations for workplace incidents, ensure that this information is recorded, analysed and communicated to identify lessons learnt to avoid future occurrences.
  • Identify current and emerging Workplace Health and Safety issues, and make an assessment using risk management techniques, ensuring consultation with all stakeholders
  • Support the Workplace Health and Safety Committees and provide advice, support and assistance to committee members.
  • Support and contribute to Workplace Health and Safety programs and courses to ensure they remain active, effective and practicable by educating employees and promoting a safe work culture.

How you will be assessed

The ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding, support and promotion of the organisations strategies and values, visibly leading our Safety First values.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant Acts, Standards and Codes of Practice relating to workplace health and safety and their application at the organisational level and ability to apply this to managing operational issues and risk management.
  3. Highly developed written and oral communication skills to support collaboration with a range of stakeholders, ensuring positive outcomes for the organisation.
  4. Analytical and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated ability to contribute to an improvement in safety systems and culture.
  5. Displays flexibility and responsiveness and has the initiative, attitude and ability to thrive within a dynamic, challenging and changing environment.

Highly Desirable Requirements

  • Certificate IV in Workplace Health and Safety (or higher); and/or
  • Experience in Workplace Health, Safety and Environment, or a related discipline
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Experience leading or involvement in incident investigations.

Desirable requirement:

  • Experience in Offshore or Maritime industries in a similar role
  • Working knowledge of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) regulations and obligations.
