About the role:

As the Human Identification Officer, working within the Human Identification Service (HIS) team, you will be responsible for facilitating the identification of deceased individuals admitted to the coroner for a death investigation in accordance with the Coroners Act (2008) and VIFM Act (2024).

This involves providing administrative support for reviewing cases admitted to the Victorian coroner to establish the most appropriate method of identification, liaising with the relevant stakeholders (experts within the VIFM and Victoria Police) to facilitate the identification, and presenting the identification to the coroner for their consideration.

In addition, the Human Identification Officer assists the Missing Persons Working Group in the investigation of long-term missing persons and unidentified human remains (including working with both State and National Missing Persons Units).

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide administrative support to the daily identification service for deaths reported to the Coroner.
  • Provide ongoing KPI data to the Manager of the HIS.
  • Participate in the data collection of long-term missing person cases and cases of unidentified human remains in Victoria.
  • Provide administrative support to the HIS manager.

The successful candidate will be reliable, a confident decision maker, and have a high-level of attention to detail. They will also have strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and be able to communicate with a wide array of stakeholders. Key qualification and attributes:

  • Bachelor's degree in science (preferably in forensic and related disciplines) and/or demonstrated experience in human identification/ forensic sciences.
    • Understanding of identification methods (DNA, fingerprints, odontology).
    • Capacity to work independently with good time-management skills.
    • Basic skills in Microsoft programs.
