The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is dedicated to enhancing employment opportunities and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This position is designated under Section 50 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA), and as such, only Aboriginal people are eligible to apply.
The SWAMS is a non-Government Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West of Western Australia. SWAMS delivers a wide range of community programs and has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development.
Here at SWAMS we have exciting positions available for someone looking to make a difference. As an Indigenous Outreach Worker, you will be involved in assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to self-manage by improving access to a range of health services. You will be the key link between clients, service providers and specialists with respect to appointments, transport, referrals and advocacy.
Essential Criteria
- Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent under section 50(d) Equal Opportunity Act
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of health issues impacting on Aboriginal people
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people
- Well-developed communication skills
- Computer skills including competence in the Microsoft office
- Demonstrated ability to work as a team member with minimal supervision
Desirable Criteria
- Previous experience in use of Communicare or similar database
- Previous experience working in a health setting
- Willingness/ability to work extra shifts in Bunbury and other Outreach clinics
