Australia's largest public museum organisation is seeking a Senior Keeper, Live Exhibits to join Museums Victoria.

ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Senior Keeper, Live Exhibits will play a key role in maintaining Museums Victoria's live animal collection, ensuring high-quality husbandry, exhibit management, and education programming. You will be responsible for coordinating daily care routines, supporting research initiatives, and overseeing exhibit refreshment to provide engaging visitor experiences.
This 6-month fixed-term role requires a hands-on approach to animal care, risk management, and team leadership, ensuring that Museums Victoria continues to be a leader in live animal exhibitions.
SOME OF THE KEY DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Supervising and facilitating keeper staff in the daily husbandry of live animals as per established husbandry plans.
- Maintaining and refreshing live animal exhibits within Melbourne Museum, ensuring high welfare standards and engaging public displays.
- Overseeing husbandry facilities, ensuring all environmental conditions are optimal for the health and wellbeing of the collection.
- Managing food provision, inventory, and other essential resources for animal care.
- Conducting fieldwork and research to contribute to live animal collection development and exhibit enhancements.
- Supporting science education and public programs, engaging visitors in conservation and natural history topics.
- Ensuring risk management procedures and safety protocols are followed to maintain a secure and professional working environment.
- Providing expertise in animal husbandry and exhibit management, collaborating with internal departments and external stakeholders.
- Collecting and recording accurate husbandry data for scientific research and collection management.
THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT WILL HAVE:
- Extensive experience in the husbandry and display of live animals, particularly invertebrates.
- A detailed knowledge of live animal collections, including species management and exhibit design.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with experience mentoring and training staff.
- The ability to apply scientific knowledge and problem-solving to live animal care and display challenges.
- Demonstrated ability to manage small projects and collaborate across multiple departments.
- A strong understanding of risk assessment and control measures to ensure safe animal handling and exhibit maintenance.
- A Certificate-level (or higher) qualification in zoo keeping, zoology, animal science, or a related field.
OTHER INFORMATION:
This is a VPS 2.2, full-time, Fixed-term (6 months). The salary offered is $66,063 base on grade (pro rata) + 11.5% superannuation. The successful applicant will be required to undergo a National Police Records Check.
