Actively contribute to advancement of scientific excellence in Organic Chemistry by initiating, leading and participating in research projects targeted at enhancing the analytical capability of the laboratory; advocate for, influence and promote Organic Chemistry's strategic direction for research and innovation by representing the laboratory at internal and external conferences and workshops; encouraging research presentations.

Key decision maker for matters pertaining to chemical analysis utilising various mass spectrometry techniques including HPLC, GCMS, GCMS/MS, LCMS/MS, LC-HRMS, and a variety of sample introduction techniques such as purge and trap, headspace, SPME, thermal desorption and air cannister systems

Provide management oversight and support to research projects within Organic Chemistry. Provide leadership to staff regarding management of research, milestone reporting, research directions, outcomes, presentations, and publishing of research findings.

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Expert technical knowledge of highly specialised techniques and equipment used for Organic Chemical analysis including but not limited to a focus on organic residue analysis in environmental matrices and biota, and waste, potable, surface and other water samples.
  • Demonstrated high level knowledge and skill in a variety of instruments used in environmental analysis including GCMS, GCMS/MS LCMS/MS, LC-HRMS and other techniques.
  • Exceptional knowledge of ISO 17025 and NATA compliance requirements for chemical laboratories including: confidentiality, conflict of interest, risk mitigation, method development and validation.
  • Well-developed skills in leadership of a professional team, research project management, interpretation of data, literature reviews, and peer review publication processes.
  • High level verbal and written communication skills to align team culture and vision, and as the point of reference for clients, contracts, enquiries, relevant Standards committees and other Health Department service providers.
  • Expert knowledge of the legislative requirements of waters analysis including familiarity with ADWG, ANZECC water quality guidelines, Environmental Protection Act, Water Act, Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act, Guidelines for managing risks in Recreational Water, Environmental Protection Act, Public Health Act, Food Act and Biosecurity Act.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • Appointment to this position requires a minimum mandatory possession of a Bachelor of Science degree with a Chemistry majorfrom a recognised university, or equivalent as determined by the Deputy Director General or delegate.
  • While not mandatory, a higher degree (Masters or PhD in Chemistry) and/or additional qualification in Management would be well regarded.
  • You must supply your Degree and Academic Record with your application so that an assessment can be made of the chemistry content of your qualification.
  • Please detail any visa conditions you may have if you are not a permanent resident of Australia.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements
  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against Hepatitis B during their employment (Health Employment Directive No. 01/16).
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
  • Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
