Nepean Hospital is a teaching hospital that provides tertiary referral services in emergency care, coronary care, diagnostics, gynaecology, paediatric, neonatal intensive care/ICU, maternity, mental health, rehabilitation, and surgery. The successful incumbent is responsible to the Professor of Paediatrics and Clinical Director of Women’s and Children’s Health. The role will be primarily based within research pertaining to Women’s and Children’s Health and work closely with interdisciplinary teams across the hospital and with the Charles Perkins Centre, The University of Sydney. Additionally, this role is responsible for facilitating, supervising and conducting research projects which are mainly laboratory based.

What you will bring to the role

  1. Extensive experience in both preclinical and clinical studies and proven track record of working with both clinicians and scientists. Demonstrated experience in disease models particularly allergies, autoimmunity, infectious diseases, metabolism and pregnancy and early life studies.
  2. Tertiary qualifications of at least PhD, with experience in leading projects – from securing funding, gaining ethics and governance approvals, managing the finances, and completing the data for publication in international journals and at conferences.
  3. Highly competitive track record (publications and citations) and ability to write grants/fellowship to obtain funding. Proven leadership and management skills and experience including operational management, staff and resource management.
  4. Highly experienced in bioinformatics, proficient in either R or python, and the use of high-performance computing systems. Experience with bulk and single cell RNAseq analysis and microbiome/metagenomic analysis is essential. Able to perform large scale data integration and machine learning for classification and prediction.
  5. High level of competence and experience in laboratory work, including cell culture, molecular biology, microbiology and experience with working with gut microbiota extracellular vesicles.
  6. Experience in metabolomics (sample processing and data analysis) using technologies like nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry.
  7. Competent in flow cytometry including spectral flow cytometry, and data analysis using t-SNE or UMAP
  8. Experience with nutritional studies in both preclinical and clinical setting as well as nutritional geometry analysis.
