QPS Legal Services represents the Service before the courts, as well as the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal and other tribunals, in relation to matters such as discipline, discrimination, inquests and appeals.We also provide legal advice and executive support to the Commissioner and Senior Executive on a range of issues including contractual and partnership agreements, statutory interpretation and release of information.
The Core Capability Requirements For This Role Are
- Assist in managing the conduct of a professional legal practice as a specialist practitioner by undertaking complex legal matters for the Queensland Police Service and represent the Queensland Police Service before the courts and tribunals.
- Provide advice to the Commissioner and other members of the senior executive on complex and/or sensitive matters affecting, or likely to affect, the Queensland Police Service, including complex criminal matters and the discipline of police officers, the prosecution of police officers and associated legal and industrial issues.
- Provide advice and strategic guidance to minimise legal action against the organisation and its employees and for the management of legal risks.
- Provide legal advice, where appropriate, to operational police officers concerning substantive law and police powers relating to investigations and police operations.
- Maintain and comply with the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct.
Mandatory
- Possession of a degree in law from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent qualifications.
- Admission, or eligibility for immediate admission, as a barrister or solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and enrolment, or eligibility for enrolment to practice in the Federal and High Courts of Australia.
