Founded in 1968, Madderns is a well-established, independently owned and operated, leading Australian Patent and Trade Mark Attorney firm. Our experienced team of attorneys provides highly-specialised intellectual property (IP) services and advice to enable our clients to secure and defend their brands and technologies.

We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic Trainee Patent Attorney to join our ICT team in Adelaide and assist our specialist ICT attorneys to protect our clients’ innovations.

Patent Engineers, Patent Technical Specialists, newly qualified Patent Attorneys, or candidates already undertaking studies towards patent attorney registration are also encouraged to apply.

The Role

You will use your technical expertise and growing experience to assist our specialist Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) patent attorneys with their local and international client work. Working under the supervision of several experienced patent attorneys, you will gain skills in client management, interviewing inventors, conducting patent searches, drafting technical descriptions of inventions and industrial designs, and preparing correspondence relating to protection of patents and designs. You will be working on subject matter in technical areas including electrical, electronic and computing technologies, telecommunications, lasers and optics, quantum computing, applications of machine learning and AI, space based systems, and energy management systems.

As a trainee, you will be expected to undertake studies in Intellectual Property Law (8 university-level subjects) together with comprehensive on-the-job training to become registered as both a Patent Attorney and as a Trade Marks Attorney.

You will be encouraged to participate in networking events, seminars and other activities aimed towards growing your practice.

What We Are Seeking

To be considered for this role you will have:

• a Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in physics, electrical/electronic engineering, telecommunications, data science/AI or computer engineering.

• PhD or postgraduate qualifications in your field (highly regarded).

• previous industry or practical work experience in your field of study.

• excellent fluency in English, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• a client-focussed approach.

• desire to undertake university-level studies and register as a patent attorney.

Ideally, you will have a high level of technical expertise, previous industry or research experience in your field of study, and be a lateral thinker who is able to critically analyse complex material and demonstrate high attention to detail.

You will be committed to your own career development, to ongoing learning, to studying and to becoming registered as a patent attorney.

Fluency in English, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills, are critical to engage confidently with your team members and our clients; to understand and communicate technical concepts accurately; to assess incoming reports and correspondence issued by government patent and design offices; and to properly draft patent specifications.

Other engineering disciplines that have a significant electrical, electronic or physics component will also be considered.

Training & Development

As a trainee, you will receive financial support and paid study leave to undertake post-graduate studies in Intellectual Property Law to complete the necessary requirements to become registered as a Patent Attorney (and as a Trade Marks Attorney). The part-time study typically involves 8 subjects (usually one subject per semester). Your formal studies will be supplemented with practical experience across a wide range of client matters, together with on-the-job training, mentoring, in-house seminars, and ongoing support.
