About us

The Victorian Adult Burns Service (VABS) at The Alfred hospital is the state-wide provider of burns care for all adults with complex major burn injuries in Victoria, as well as many people with less severe burns. Each year VABS admit over 400 burns patients and reviews over 2000 outpatients.

In addition, VABS provides referral, clinical advice, support, education and training for rural and regional clinicians involved in caring for burn-injured patients. VABS collaborates with university, community and industry groups on burn awareness campaigns and provides burns education and training.

VABS undertakes research into the causes and mechanisms of burn injuries, as well as evaluating emerging clinical treatment technologies. The Victorian Adult Burns Service at The Alfred provides clinical leadership in all aspects of adult burn care.

About the role

The Skin Bioengineering Laboratory is an integral part of Victorian Adult Burn Service (VABS), Alfred Health. We are conducting a phase I clinical trial, testing a novel engineered skin, produced in Skin Bioengineering Laboratory to treat major burns. This cell therapy is offered to patients who are admitted to the Alfred hospital with burns. The research assistant will be mostly working with other staff members in producing the engineered skin onsite. The research assistant will ensure that all activities undertaken, where applicable, are in compliance with the Australian Code of GMP - Human Blood and Blood Components, Human Tissues and Human Cellular Therapy Products. This is a full-time appointment, that includes one weekend day per week. We are looking for a team player, with strong communication skills, who can also work independently in an isolated, controlled environment.

About you

Essential:
  • Completion of Honours Degree in biological sciences or related area
  • Competent in cell culture techniques, particularly primary cells
  • Experience in immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence techniques
  • Demonstrated capacity to organise work effectively and efficiently and deliver output in a timely manner • High level proficiency in computer software packages, including Image J, Excel, Power Point and Prism
  • Strong communicator with excellent inter personal skills, but also the ability to work independently.
  • Meticulous record keeping and reporting.
Desireable
  • Experience or Knowledge of good manufacturing practice (GMP) guidelines.
  • Experience in a clinical research environment or knowledge of cell therapy.
  • Experience in 3D organ models preparation and analysis.
  • Experience in cell and genomic analysis, including Flow cytometry and transcriptome analysis. • Experience in animal experimentation
