Description:
The Employer :Grassland Goats is a family-owned agricultural enterprise dedicated to producing high-quality goat meat for domestic and international markets. Established in 2018, the family has over 30 years of experience in agriculture, including producing beef cattle and growing grain and fodder crops in Queensland's Western and Southern Downs regions.
Their venture began with the introduction of 1,200 rangeland goats to manage overgrown vegetation, which improved productivity. This inspired them to create the Grassland Goats brand and diversify their large-scale cattle operation to include meat goats and, later, meat sheep while focusing on sustainable practices.
They are now one of Australia’s leading goat meat enterprises, owning and participating along a vertically integrated value chain from farm to the consumer. The implementation of a top-tier breeding program emphasising superior genetics and targeted nutritional programs ensures the highest-quality meat products are supplied into the marketplace.
The Role
Grassland Goats' livestock and farming division is experiencing exciting growth and is seeking a skilled Senior Farmhand to join their team. This role involves overseeing daily operations and reporting directly to the farm owner, focusing on livestock care, crop production, agricultural technology, land development and sustainable practices over two properties comprising 23,000 acres.
Key responsibilities across all areas of the operation include mustering livestock (by horse, bike or buggy); implementing husbandry practices for goats, meat sheep, and beef cattle; preparing and feeding out grain rations; trucking animals to the abattoir one day per week and picking up livestock from our western suppliers from time to time. Other duties include vehicle and machinery maintenance, constructing new and maintaining existing fencing, supervising junior employees and fostering a collaborative team environment.
The Offer
The successful candidate will negotiate a competitive salary that includes accommodation and utilities. The accommodation is a partially furnished home on a separate property with established gardens, a cold room, and access to yards, stables, and a chicken pen. Horses and working dogs are welcome, but their presence must be disclosed in the application.
Employment opportunities for a partner may also be available, depending on skills and experience. A primary school is located in Karara, while primary and secondary schools are located in nearby Warwick and Inglewood, where essential amenities are easily accessible.
The Ideal Candidate
We are seeking a candidate who has extensive experience in livestock operations and enjoys working in a progressive and innovative enterprise. The ideal individual should be willing to permanently relocate to the Southern Downs region and reside on the farm, viewing this as a long-term career opportunity. It is essential to work with livestock in a low-stress manner, prioritising animal welfare practises at all times. The following attributes are also required:
- Hold a current MC class license, or have held an HR class license for 12 months with a willingness to upgrade to an MC license - this is important.
- Capable of mustering livestock (cattle, sheep, and goats) using horses, quad bikes, or buggies safely and effectively within the property's terrain.
