An opportunity is available for a Claims Team Manager – Civil Claims (NSW) to join our Sydney team in a permanent, full-time position.

As the Claims Team Manager – Civil Claims (NSW/ACT), you will lead a team of eight civil claims staff and provide operational execution of best practice programs and processes to ensure the best possible outcomes for our members. You will manage your own claims portfolio and provide mentorship to an experienced and expert team of claims professionals.

The key responsibilities include:

  • Manage and lead a team of eight Claims staff in the provision of civil claims services to Avant and its members, with focus on medical negligence compensation claims.
  • Support the Head of Practice, Claims (Civil) NSW/ACT in driving portfolio excellent outcomes for NSW/ACT civil claims.
  • Provide guidance and technical support to Claims staff in optimising claim outcomes for our members, including detailed knowledge and application of breach, causation and quantum.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for the NSW/ACT team, monitor operations and actively pursue opportunities for improvement in claims processes, procedures and member outcomes.
  • Manage a portfolio of member claims and investigations in accordance with the relevant Avant claims and investigations guidelines.
  • As required, provide guidance and advice with respect to indemnification of claims.
  • As directed, and in support of Retention & Growth initiatives, educate members, staff and internal and external bodies in medico-legal, clinical risk and claims matters.
  • Manage the relationship between Claims staff and other Avant departments.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in law or Health.
  • 5 plus years’ experience in medical negligence law, either in private practice or in an insurance environment.
  • Senior claims management experience in a medical indemnity environment is favourable although not essential.
  • Advanced understanding of medical indemnity law and insurance principles.
  • Strong financial acumen and the aptitude to drive business goals.
  • Strong people leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated insurance and health law knowledge.
  • Relationship building skills, proactive in developing relationships & understanding customer requirements.
  • Excellent communication, relationship building and advocacy skills.
  • Strong time management and multi-tasking skills in a legal and/or claims environment.
