Description:

The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness and response services to fire in the built and landscape environments, as well as scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The QFD provides a multi-hazard emergency response, including road crash rescue, bushfire, hazardous material, technical and vertical rescue, severe weather incidents, remote and swiftwater rescue, and provides a number of functions supporting community safety outcomes.


The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), as well as the broader department which work together to pre-empt, prevent, mitigate and manage the consequences of fires and other emergencies on Queensland communities and support our large volunteer membership across the state.


The QFD is an organisation that is focused on reframing the department’s relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and organisations through the Path to Treaty, Closing the Gap and building our cultural capability.

Talent Acquisition Services is the central point of contact for the department’s talent acquisition activities and to operationalise the attraction, selection and recruitment strategy through the effective delivery of modern and contemporary recruitment practices and services that enhance the overall experience from recruitment to retirement, and support an inclusive, diverse and capable pool of talent to meet organisational objectives and fulfil operational requirements.


Reporting to the Executive Manager, you will be responsible for fostering employee engagement, retainment and morale, motivating and engaging employees to thrive and ultimately set employees up for success. You will ensure future talent growth and success through the identification of employees’ strengths, needs and wants; leveraging their talents to the fullest in line with the departments’ strategic goals, culture and purpose; and leading the empowerment of employees to increase productivity levels, the efficiency of business processes and improve retention rates.

Highly desirable requirements

  • Knowledge and/or experience or qualifications in recruitment and/or human resource management or similar discipline.
  • Experience or qualifications in business or relevant discipline.

Your part in the ongoing success of our department will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:

  • Proactively develop and embed selection and recruitment processes in the department to support strategies that improve all stages of the recruitment and selection experience.
  • Analysis, design and implement innovative attraction, selection and recruitment practices to support effective candidate assessment and design processes to remove barriers for traditionally disadvantaged that enhance overall experience from recruitment to retirement.
  • Review and provide advice on recruitment processes to ensure compliance including the department’s management of conflicts of interest and compliance with the recruitment and selection directive and the Public Sector Act.
  • Provide advice and guidance to hiring managers, internal and external candidates on navigating recruitment processes, including advice on reasonable adjustments, and contribute to job evaluations and role design as required.
  • Coordinate the department’s transfer at level process, executive recruitment activities, statewide campaigns for operational and non-operational recruitment and provide ongoing support to organisation wide transfer at level process.
  • Develop and maintain effective stakeholder relationships and networks across the department and business partners to identify opportunities, achieve outcomes and facilitate cooperation.
  • Undertake research and analysis of emerging recruitment issues and trends likely to impact the strategic direction of the department and develop supporting policy and solutions.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of reports, briefing notes, submissions, business cases, departmental and other correspondence, in accordance with departmental requirements and governance.
