About the role

Mater Health is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Quality and Safety Manger to join the Mater Mother’s team on a full time, maximum term basis, covering periods of leave over the next 12 months.

This position reports directly to the General Manager and is responsible for activities relating to Quality and Clinical Safety Management, and accreditation, across the hospital/service, which are essential to the licensing, service level agreements and contracts. The position will be embedded within the services it works with, responsible for all aspects of clinical quality and safety for that service.

With a focus on quality systems, consumer experience and managing clinical risk/safety this role will work collaboratively with staff and managers/clinicians to ensure quality governance systems are in place, clinical risk frameworks are functioning effectively, and there is a continuous improvement cycle in the delivery of high-quality healthcare.

Salary: Commensurate with experience plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits!

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead, develop, implement and maintain Mater Mothers’ Hospitals (MMHs) quality system
  • Manage the MMHs quality management system which incorporates compliance with the accreditation standards.
  • Work with MMHs leadership teams to monitor and ensure preparation for accreditation for all services.
  • Support a culture that enables staff to understand and comply with quality, clinical risk and patient safety guidelines to meet relevant accreditation standards and legislative obligations.
  • Lead, manage and/or oversee annual quality audits, and review and maintain audit tools.
  • Analyse audit results collaborating on the creation of improvement plans and act on audit findings and recommendations to ensure compliance.
  • Ensure an internal audit schedule is in place which delivers risk minimisation, compliance to accreditation and quality standards.
  • Coordinate surveys for doctor, staff and patient experience (as required).
  • Evaluate and prepare analysis/benchmarking reports to Executive, Management, stakeholders and relevant committees in a timely manner on: Staff/clinician satisfaction, Clinical indicators, Clinical incidents, Clinical risk and patient safety, Patient feedback/satisfaction and consumer experience, External audits and evaluations, Quality improvement, and others as required.
  • Management of the quality improvement system ensuring non-conformities are recorded and investigated to determine cause and ensuring corrective or improvement activities are closed out in a timely manner.
  • Maintain clinical incident and risk reporting system ensuring appropriate completion and follow up by management in a timely manner.
  • Management and review of consumer feedback and track and manage follow up.
  • Assist with the review and upkeep of policies and procedures (including patient privacy and confidentiality), liaising with relevant staff to ensure compliance and best practice guidelines are implemented.
  • Contribute to safe and quality patient care, visitor and employee safety on every occasion by adhering to the relevant legislation, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Ensure ongoing preparation, planning, implementation and evaluation of accreditation standards.
  • Ensure that foundational programs are implemented and evaluated, including but not limited to: clinical risk from the patient/consumer’s perspective, clinical governance responsibilities for safety and quality, legislative responsibilities related to patient harm and reportable incidents, clinical outcomes analysis and reporting, incident investigation methods, human error and human factors, principles of teamwork and leadership style, open disclosure, creating and sustaining a patient safety culture that has person-centred care at its centre, applying evidence-based practices to develop and support effective multidisciplinary teams, effective morbidity and mortality / craft group meetings, clinical audit and variation, clinical care standards, and management / monitoring of clinical indicators and incident/event trends to ensure continuous improvement and shared learnings across all Mater services.

About you

Essential qualifications

  • Relevant registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • Relevant qualification and/or substantial work experience (up to 5 years) in managing organisational clinical governance/quality systems.
  • Experience in healthcare sector, specifically in tertiary maternity, neonatal and related services.

Experience

  • Postgraduate qualifications in a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading, implementing and maintaining a quality management system and executing quality improvement measures
  • Demonstrated experience in evaluating workplace practices against accreditation standards, quality systems and organisational policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated experience in risk and change management
  • Sound knowledge of the processes involved in maintaining accreditation status and compliance with accreditation standards
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to influence others
  • Advanced computing skills using a suite of software and ability to interrogate data
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build productive professional relationships
  • High level written communication skills (including report and policy writing)
  • Proven conceptual and analytical ability, initiative and independent judgement (including audit experience)
  • Demonstrated planning and policy development skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of healthcare sector in particular policies and practices that effects quality and clinical risk
  • Contemporary quality and clinical risk management knowledge.
