What we doAt the branch level we undertake regulatory functions by providing inspection and certification for the export of meat, meat products and the import and export of live animals and reproductive material to meet importing country requirements and Australian legislative requirements.
At the section level we provide veterinary and technical assessments, inspections and certification for the import and export of live animals and animal genetic material. We work under the Export Control Act 2020 and Biosecurity Act 2015 to ensure compliance with Australian and international requirements for the import and export of live animals and genetic materials.

The duties of a Veterinary Officer include but are not limited to:
• assessing and processing applications for exporting/importing live animals and reproductive materials
• inspecting live animals to ensure they meet Australian and international requirements and are fit for travel
• communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders through clear verbal and written updates
• maintaining accurate records, both digital and manual
• auditing and approving facilities for livestock, horses and artificial breeding operations
• handling illegal or accidentally imported animals
• collaborating with team members to ensure biosecurity and compliance standards are met.
In addition to the above duties, Melbourne Veterinary Officers will be required to assist at the Mickleham Post Entry Quarantine Facility (PEQ) as required. This includes performing veterinary health checks of companion animals, supervising the sampling of imported horses and taking samples from imported pigeons and poultry.
Applicants should note that as a Veterinary Officer in VEMB you may be required to undertake activities across export meat and live animal veterinary officer roles . VEMB undertakes regulatory functions by providing inspection and certification for the export of meat, meat products and the import and export of live animals and reproductive material in order to meet importing country requirements and Australian legislative requirements.
Please note that this selection process will initially be used to fill an ongoing role in Mickleham . The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature. These vacancies may occur in any of the locations listed on the Job Description . Non-ongoing (specified-term) contracts may be offered to new employees for an initial period of up to twelve months with the possibility of extension up to a maximum period of two years in total. Non ongoing (casual) contracts will be offered for periods of up to two years. Some of these non-ongoing positions may become ongoing in the next eighteen months. Should a position become ongoing then the merit pool may be used to fill the vacancy on an ongoing basis.
