The Role
Research Engineering (RE) are seeking a suitably qualified and motivated Senior Microfabrication Specialist dedicated to developing a career in miniaturised electronic, electro-optic, nano science and materials research areas (including miniaturised RF hardware).
The successful applicant will undertake design, integration, and assembly of complex micro-scale systems and devices. The role requires knowledge of microfabrication and integration of micro-scale devices into larger systems under limited supervision (Mask design, photolithography, physical & chemical vapour deposition, micro-packaging and material characterization SEM and EDS).
The scope of work in this field is growing which will require you to provide high level of technological advice to DST scientists in the field of microengineering while collaboratively working on research elements of high value projects (e,g. packaging of electro-optics and RF devices).
The Senior Microfabrication Specialist applicant will be expected to apply their knowledge and experience in micro and nano engineering to:
  • Lead the development of new capabilities, including equipment, processes in the microfabrication research.
  • Lead technically complex projects and provide high level advice to complex technical issues in fabrication, assembly and testing of the fabricated devices.
  • Lead the microfabrication capability in areas of packaging, dicing and metrology.
  • Operate wire bonders, dicing saw, pick and place machine, scanning electron microscope and metrology equipment.
  • Foster innovation and develop products from concept to industry transition.
  • Work with other areas of RE to support multidisciplinary projects with Micro and Nano Engineering contribution.
  • Develop strong collaborative relationships with DST client base, and promote capabilities to support DST S&T program.
  • Develop and maintain strong external relationships through collaborative activities as part of the Australian Micro and Nano engineering community and leverage academia, external agencies and industry to deliver S&T outcomes.

Research Technology and Operations (RTO) Division has a workforce of engineers, technicians, computer scientists and other professional staff who deliver a wide range of highly specialised research capabilities and innovative solutions which underpin the operational capability of DST. RTO's work areas undertake a broad, on demand and dynamic array of functions to keep DST at the forefront of research and development. RTO's work areas include:
  • Scientific computing and DST's eResearch strategy;
  • Development and acquisition of a world-class secure High Performance Computing (HPC) Capability for advanced modelling and simulation;
  • Nationally recognised and unique research engineering capabilities;
  • Specialised research safety, resource management and security services to assure sovereign S&T capabilities for Defence;
  • Development and implementation of DST's research infrastructure strategy; and
  • Research Engineering (RE).

Research Engineering provide professional and advanced manufacturing to DST to enable delivery of products, prototypes and models for research, development and experimentation. RE fuses talented professional engineering and technical staff with world's best design software and cutting edge fabrication capabilities. Through design, fabrication and prototyping, RE facilitates the transition of applied research to industry for production of military capability.

  • Experience working on multiple programs concurrently.
  • Experience with being in a researcher role - forecasting immerging technologies, consulting to clients, reporting project milestones and timelines - Be the technical interface.
  • Experience with preparing reports and other engineering documents - Design documents and plans.
  • A high level of confidence to provide technical leadership to projects - Develop specifications, designs, and architecture to projects, be the SME.
