The Role
Research Engineering (RE) branch provides integrated, multi-disciplined, leading edge, rapid response and innovative scientific engineering capability to the Defence S&T program. RE is dedicated to collaborating closely with DSTG researchers while providing valuable support to Defence and National Security operations and provides capabilities across six functional areas: Electronic and Software Engineering; Electronic Fabrication; Micro and Nano Engineering; Mechanical Fabrication; Mechanical Engineering; and Scientific Applied Imaging. Certified to the IOS9001 Quality Management System, RE provides consistent fit for purpose engineering solutions and the application of best business practices.
The Senior Additive Manufacturing Specialist is responsible for Additive Manufacturing Development under limited direction from the Research Engineering Principal Mechanical Engineer. Responsibilities include the development and implementation of additive manufacturing capability taking into consideration all aspects of the design and manufacturing workflow. The additive manufacturing capability will be developed in partnership with other DSTG subject matter experts to satisfy the future anticipated requirements of the DSTG wider research program in areas such as advanced functional materials and rapid proto-typing.
The Senior Additive Manufacturing Specialist will be required to develop mechanical and printing solutions to contribute to research activities utilising DSTG's multi-material 3D printing capability as well as the use of traditional and advanced Computer Numerical Controlled machining for rapid prototyping. The Senior Additive Manufacturing Specialist will be involved with the development of bespoke multi-material and 3D printing strategies. The Senior Additive Manufacturing Specialist will be responsible for the operation of several multi-material and 3D printing technologies to support the collective needs of the Science and Technology program.
Position Duties
The Senior Additive manufacturing Specialist applicant will be expected to apply their knowledge and experience in additive manufacturing technologies to:
- Lead the development of Additive Manufacturing Capability across Research Engineering to produce Prototype and Engineered components that directly contribute to wider research activities involving DSTG multi-material and additive manufacturing;
- Liaise and create relationships with other national DSTG subject matter experts to gain greater understanding of the key research requirements in multi-material and additive manufacturing and associated hardware/software required to support Defence research activities;
- Scheduling of workflow, operation of plant and maintenance of the onsite multi-material and additive manufacturing capabilities, from both an equipment and software perspective;
- Lead responsibility for computer networking of the Mechanical Fabrication Section and knowledge sharing in the Additive Manufacturing domain with DSTG staff and wider Defence, Industry and Academic partners including advances in hardware interfacing and programming;
- Manage the delivery of additive manufacturing outputs to DSTG/Defence stakeholders utilising onsite additive manufacturing capabilities;
- Be a member of integrated multidisciplinary teams that have Additive Manufacturing components;
- Develop strong positive relationships with other DSTG stakeholders and the Engineering Support Services Contractor, and promote capabilities to be incorporated into the Defence S&T program;
- Develop strong external relationships and leverage academia, external agencies and industry to deliver S&T outcomes;
- Manage future growth with emerging technologies around Additive Manufacturing, including procurement activities, infrastructure requests supporting new plant and commissioning RE Capability Development;
- Responsible for maintaining the Additive Manufacturing contributions to the Research Engineering Quality Management System.
