The Role
Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) has a Senior Project Manager position available within our Hypersonics Engineering Discipline of Research Engineering (RE). Reporting to the Group Leader Hypersonics and RE Operations, and operating from the DSTG Edinburgh site, the Senior Project Manager will work as part of a small team responsible for the programmatic leadership of engineering and design professionals delivering an advanced capability to DSTG. They will use their programmatic expertise to apply and develop innovative research engineering techniques to ensure that DSTG remains at the forefront of research and development.
Experience in managing the unique and complex network of challenges associated with the design, analysis, manufacturing, integration, ground test, and trial of hypersonic flight test/demonstrator vehicles is considered essential. The position is integral to the Project Delivery Team executive and has accountability and responsibility for the successful execution of complex long-term hypersonics projects carrying significant technical and programmatic risk. Exemplary client/stakeholder engagement and a proven capacity to effectively communicate with a range of diverse internal and external individuals and teams is a requirement of the role. Also a requirement is a proven track-record of successful achievement working at all stages of the project lifecycle, including the formative initiation phase, in addition to the planning, execution, monitoring and control, and finally close-out stages.
Under limited guidance you will be required to:
- Establish project teams including standing up project organisation structures, communication mechanisms, and governance arrangements that draw upon resources and inputs of stakeholders from within the wider Defence ecosystem.
- Manage hypersonics-related project execution and performance against approved Project Management Plans.
- Identify and manage human and physical resources to achieve hypersonics-related project requirements.
- Report and communicate project issues or concerns (e.g. cost, schedule, scope, technical performance) to clients, sponsors and other stakeholders.
- Set individual project milestones and budgets.
- Project manage complex developmental activities involving multiple parallel and interdependent lines of effort spanning both internal and external groups/organisations.
- Manage project work breakdowns within DSTG's corporate Project and Program Management environment, and make use of RE's Activity Management System.
- Assist with the professional development of other project management staff.
- Display leadership by proactively contributing to the development of new capabilities, including an understanding of future potential requirements, how to satisfy these requirements, and the ability to implement solutions.

RTO also provides specialised research enabling capabilities to other groups and services with Defence, the Australian Intelligence community, our allies and/or our partners in industry and academia. Research Engineering provide professional and advanced manufacturing to Defence to enable delivery of products, prototypes and models for research, development and experimentation. RE fuses talented professional engineering and technical staff with world's best design software and cutting edge fabrication capabilities.
