The Role

As a research professional within Defence, you will be able to apply your experience using social science statistics, data management, document analysis, and program evaluation in a unique environment. We are looking for experienced researchers to join our multidisciplinary team. We seek individuals with the capacity to generate insights that empowers Defence to grow its workforce, support a better workplace environment, and understand social and community influences on Defence.
Your work will contribute to people and organisational policy evaluation and development. We are interested to hear how you could apply your specialised skills and expert knowledge – such as psychometrics, data science, program management, research governance, communication, evaluation or others – to Defence research.

Your role may have you working independently on a project, or collaborating with a broad network of stakeholders, under broader program objectives. It will require you to translate outcomes and findings effectively for accountable leaders and decision-makers.

About our Team
Defence has dedicated multidisciplinary research teams, responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive workforce research portfolio. Our team facilitates all aspects of enterprise people and workplace research from foundation to knowledge translation.
This includes governing aspects of research ethics and integrity, developing and delivering a program of surveys and censuses, and engaging in various scientific approaches to investigate organisational/people challenges.
The expertise derived from our program are widely applied by decision-makers and leaders, to monitor and analyse workforce strategies and develop successful interventions.

It is also integral for representing Defence’s formal accountabilities to the government, public and participating in international intelligence exchange.
Our current program of research explores workplace experiences and behaviour; culture and organisational development; workforce demography; workforce demand, design and incentives; and social policy related to the intersections of work and Defence families, well-being and gender.

Our Ideal Candidate
We are seeking candidates interested in using quantitative and qualitative data to understand recurring issues, improve policies, and shape processes. Experience using excel, statistics packages, data visualisation or business process mapping software is highly desired.
To be successful in our research teams you will be able to demonstrate a background in one or more of the following:
- Human and behavioural science (e.g. sociology, psychology, economics, demography, organisational behaviour, or data sciences).
- Research expertise in relevant subjects (e.g. workforce retention and attraction, labour market dynamics, organisational development, culture, wellbeing, social policy, gender).
- Expertise/skills in research methods and delivery (e.g. measurement and psychometrics, statistics, data sciences, research governance and ethics, data visualisation and dashboards, or research communication and knowledge mobilisation).
- Extensive experience delivering applied and foundational social research in government and other settings.
- Experience evaluating impact from public policies, processes, or initiatives.
