The First Nations Strategy and Partnerships Division is looking for someone with strong policy skills and experience to develop and lead departmental responses to Closing the Gap, policy partnerships, innovative policy solutions and government submissions. In this role you will have an opportunity to experience, and inform the whole policy cycle.

Your Role

The Principal Policy Officer will support the Director, Government Relations and Social Policy Unit within the First Nations Strategy and Partnerships division. We are looking for someone with strong policy development and analysis experience, who can contribute to the coordination and development of departmental and whole-of-government processes to improve educational outcomes for First Nations students. You will have exceptional writing and critical thinking skills.

Responsibilities Include

  • Participate in the formulation and implementation of innovative and workable policy options and solutions.
  • Coordinate and undertake extensive research and assess strategic and policy initiatives occurring at state, national and international levels that have implications for First Nations children and young people in the early childhood education, school education and tertiary education sectors.
  • Provide strategic advice to the Minister, the Director-General and senior officers of the department.
  • Coordinate and prepare Cabinet submissions, policy responses, briefings, speaking notes and other documents.
  • Establish networks and liaise with senior officers and representatives in a range of government and non-government agencies on policy implications of submissions to the Minister, the Director-General and senior officers of the department.
