Agricultural Assistant - Home Hill State High School, Education

Department of Education
Townsville Full-day Full-time

Description:

Home Hill State High School is seeking a keen and enthusiastic Agricultural Assistant to join our team. We are proud to announce our new Agricultural Precinct that includes a fully automated and fertigated plant growing and protected cropping structure (greenhouse), fertigation room, onsite teaching space, packing shed and cold room. Our precinct also includes a 0.6ha agricultural Dig INN plot, bee hives and a mango plantation. Furthermore, the school has a separate facility set up for Aquaponics incorporating a red claw crayfish farm and vegetable grow beds. We have also allocated more areas to develop an orchard, poultry housing and host-plant trial plots in the future. To maintain these facilities, we are now looking for a permanent full-time team member to provide high level agricultural support to develop its capabilities.

About Us:

Home Hill State High School is located in the Burdekin region, approximately an hour south of Townsville. The area is predominantly a sugar growing area, and renowned for producing cane with the highest sugar content in Australia.

Home Hill is a delightful town, with much history and tradition, and some of the best fishing around.

We pride ourself on an extensive record of academic excellence, consistently graduating students with excellent outcomes. Yet our school also offers students a broad range of vocational certificates to enable entry to a range of potential pathways; to continue on with further study, gain apprenticeships or move into the workforce. Our school is an integral part of the Home Hill community and closely identifies with, and connects to the local community aspirations.

As a relatively small secondary school, we are able to develop an extensive knowledge of our students as individuals. With that comes the ability to focus greater personal attention to understanding the hopes, needs and aspirations of our very important young people. However, our school is still able to provide a range of opportunities equal to considerably larger schools.

About the Role:

Responsibilities include, but not limited to;

  • Care and feeding of animals, cleaning cages and pens and related duties.
  • Take simple measurements, for example, weighing crop yields.
  • Order and/or collect general agricultural supplies and materials as authorised by the Head of Department, Principal or nominated delegate.
  • Animal husbandry, crop and soil improvement and enhancement activities.
  • Preparation and maintenance of field study sites by establishing and repairing fences, gates and soil maintenance.
  • Arrange regular servicing and maintenance of agricultural machinery and equipment to ensure compliance with warranty and safety requirements.
  • Collect and/or receive deliveries of agricultural materials, unpack, check invoices and appropriately store and monitor petrol, LP gas, insecticides, herbicides, fertilisers, chemicals and associated supplies and prepare requisitions.

Our ideal candidate is someone who can contribute to the efficient and effective operation of our Ag Precinct and support our dedicated agricultural teachers.

Please refer to the attached role description for any mandatory requirements for this position.

How to Apply:

  • Please attach a brief resume including contact details for 2 referees (referees should have an understanding of your relevant previous work history); and
  • A 1-pg written statement in response to the attached role description.

We welcome all applicants to share any support needed to ensure our recruitment process is inclusive.

Applications remain current for 12 months from the closing date and may be considered for appointment to identical or similar vacancies within the Department.

Applications from recruitment agencies will not be accepted.

When working in regulated employment an employee must have a current Working with Children Clearance (blue card) issued by Blue Card Services.

Salary rate shown is reflective of full-time (1.0 FTE).
