Murri Watch Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Corporation is a not-for-profit organisation incorporated under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (‘the CATSI Act’).

Murri Watch is dedicated to:

• Reducing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths and self-harm in custody by promoting the physical, cultural, economic, and social well-being of our community.

• Leading in culturally proficient and community-sensitive services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals vulnerable to contact with the police, affected by public drunkenness, watch-house detention, youth detention, homelessness, or at risk of homelessness.

• Ensuring continuity of care through specialised skills in engagement, assessment, creative interventions, and navigating human services support systems.

Murri Watch was initially established in response to the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. We continue our commitment to reducing the over-representation of First Nations people in the criminal justice system and to supporting people who are homeless, rough sleeping and transitioning to stable housing.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

An opportunity exists for a Program Coordinator at the Murri Watch Head Office in Brisbane.

The objectives of the Program Coordinator are to:

• Coordinate cell visitor programs.

• Contribute to and facilitate the delivery high quality services.

• Facilitate effective communication between service users and key organisations, government departments and agencies.

• Demonstrate enthusiasm for building local networks and bringing people together.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the cultural issues, barriers, and solutions to improving the quality of life of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in contemporary society.

• Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience of issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and incarceration and government and non-government support service systems.

• Highly developed interpersonal skills including conflict resolution, liaising, negotiating outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and networking including a sound knowledge of community, government, and non-government service providers.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in a writing style appropriate to the intended audience including communicating effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

• Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

• Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills.

• Ability to work flexible hours/shift work as required.

• Ability to create a strong, positive team environment.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft programs including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

• Aboriginality and /or Torres Strait Islander identification.

• Provide the names and contact details of two Aboriginal / Torres Strait Islander people from your community that are willing to act as referees for you.

• Satisfactory clearance of a criminal records check.

• Possession of current “Blue Card for Child Related Employment” or willing to obtain.

• Possession of a current First Aid Certificate or willing to obtain.

• Possession of a current open Queensland driver’s license.
