About the Role

The Department of Upper GI and Hepatobiliary Surgery research unit at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Eastern Health has a strong tradition of surgical research. To grow our research output, we plan to employ a research coordinator at 0.8 EFT to work with both research units, serve as the hub for communication, and run the weekly Tuesday morning research meeting at Eastern Health.

This model has worked exceptionally well at St. Vincent's Hospital, where we first started this program. With numerous collaborations spanning these two campuses, it makes perfect sense to further foster collaboration and expand the surgical research department at Eastern Health. The coordinator will work part-time at Eastern Health, with their home office at the St. Vincent's research department. This arrangement will benefit both sites and strengthen the collaboration between St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and Eastern Health.

The coordinator will work at Eastern Health one day per week on Thursdays and attend the weekly Tuesday morning research meeting. The remaining three days per week will be spent working at St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne.

  • Direct and indirect clinical trial related care of patients

  • Data collection for concurrent clinical trial research studies undertaken in the department.

  • Trial coordination activities including participant recruitment, ethics application processes, regulatory and ongoing ethics compliance and adverse event reporting,

  • Entering data in conjunction with medical staff

  • Monitoring of data entered by medical staff

  • Audit accuracy and completeness of data entry

  • Liaise with patients to obtain follow up data

Classifications for this position will be Scientist RX2 - RX4 ($68,244 - $78,977.60 per annum pro rata)

Your Contribution

  • Bachelor of Science or a relevant tertiary qualification in a health science discipline.

  • 3+ years of relevant experience in clinical research work and in research administration and support as well as an understanding of the principles and methods of research, in particular adhering to study protocols.

  • Demonstrated understanding of International Conference of Harmonisation – Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP) and knowledge of NHMRC National statement on Ethical Conduct in Research

  • Demonstrated strong organisational, planning and coordination skills and ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and judgement when resolving operational issues.

  • Highly developed interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to interact professionally with a wide range of personnel in the health and university sectors.

  • Strong computer and data skills including high level of competency with Microsoft Office Suite and software packages, including Office, Word, Excel, Power point and Endnote.

About the Upper GI and Hepatobiliary Department

The Department of Upper GI and Hepatobiliary surgery provides a comprehensive range of consultative, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in Upper GI and Hepatobiliary surgery with interests in both benign and malignant upper GI conditions, including but not limited to oesophageal, gastric, hepatic, biliary and pancreatic malignancy, hiatus hernias, ERCP, and bariatric surgery.
