Role overview

Mensline Counsellors provide phone-based support to men across Queensland who are experiencing domestic and family violence (DFV) or are perpetrators of DFV. As the primary point of contact, Mensline Counsellors respond to incoming calls promptly and are required to complete comprehensive DFV risk and needs assessments to determine whether the caller has recently or historically used violence, intended to use violence, or experienced interpersonal violence.

Using an intersectional and trauma-informed approach, Mensline Counsellors provide appropriate responses to manage risks and maximise the safety of those in need of protection. Based on the assessments, they develop suitable safety plans and referral pathways. Additionally, Mensline Counsellors are expected to offer compassionate, non-judgmental crisis counselling and psychological first aid to support emotional and psychological concerns. Furthermore, they provide relevant information and clear guidance to assist callers in navigating available support services.

It is also expected that Mensline Counsellors complete inbound referrals—such as those from QLD Police, correctional centres, or court-ordered referrals—between calls.
