The Role
Working within the Legal Services Unit, Corporate Services Division you will be involved in providing legal advice and services to the Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers with a focus on statutory interpretation and high level written legal advice.
Key Accountabilities
- Work unsupervised to provide quality and timely legal advice and services to the Minister, the Director-General and other officers across the agency.
- Providing advice about statutory functions and powers and public law issues.
- Provide commercial law legal advice and solutions on complex and sensitive legal matters.
- Manage and undertake drafting of the most complex commercial, real property & intellectual property agreements in a challenging, high volume environment.
- Together with officers of Crown Law and external legal service providers, project manage complex litigation.
- Prepare instructions to the Crown Solicitor or external providers of legal services on complex matters.
- Draft, update and advise on instruments of delegation made by the Minister and the Director-General under portfolio legislation.
- Assist with responses to notices of non-party disclosure, subpoenas, right to information and other disclosure processes.
- Exercise initiative and respond quickly and effectively to non-routine, urgent matters requiring legal advice.
- Develop and maintain appropriate internal and external networks.
- Participate in the implementation of staff development and training programs and improved systems, methods and procedures to facilitate efficiency in the operation of Legal Services.
- Admission or eligibility for immediate admission as a barrister, solicitor or legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software and Nuance Power PDF software (or equivalent) is desirable.
- Flexible work location arrangements will be considered for this opportunity to facilitate an adaptive and agile workforce. For example, Brisbane or regional office location.

- Extensive experience in statutory interpretation and advice writing is highly desired.
