Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for a Senior / Principal Geochemist to join our team in our Brisbane office.

You will work with a diverse and growing team of scientists and engineers whose skills encompass environmental chemistry, geochemistry, geotechnical engineering, hydrology, civil design and project management, servicing mining, manufacturing, finance/legal/property and government sectors.


  • Provide specialist consulting services to undertake projects in environmental geoscience such as geochemical and hydrochemical investigations in order to assist our clients and their project needs at any point of the project life cycle.
  • Share your professional knowledge with your team members to provide technical direction to foster a culture that generates long‐term learning and development of capability.
  • Leverage existing relationships within the industry to develop new opportunities.
  • Provide successful management to one or more major projects, or tasks within major projects including responsibility for budget, schedule, health and safety and quality of the product.
  • Actively participate in activities which will increase the visibility of the firm to potential clients and recruits.

  • Tertiary qualifications in geoscience (geology/oceanography/hydrogeology/applied science) relevant Masters, MPhil or PhD in Geochemistry (environmental or exploration)/ Biogeochemistry or related discipline will be highly regarded. Post doctoral experience is also highly regarded.

A minimum of 10 years' experience in the following:

  • Fieldwork; drilling and logging of a range of media – sediment, tailings and rock, water sampling; surface and groundwater.
  • The design of sampling, analysis and quality plans which meet National and western Australian environmental regulatory standards. This must include mineralogical analysis techniques and wet chemical analysis such as oxidation tests and leach testing (static and kinetic methods).
  • Development and implementation of practical mine waste (and water) management strategies.

Essential skills for the role are:

  • Familiarity with a range of ore deposit formation mechanisms is also essential.
  • You must have demonstrated experience in applying geochemical data/knowledge into the evaluation of sustainable tailings management practices with a good working knowledge of ANCOLD and GISTM requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal English skills
  • Previous project management experience – can do approach to deliver high quality results within evolving project constraints
  • Relevant professional membership
  • Be an Australian citizen
  • Have a willingness to travel interstate and abroad

Highly regarded skills and experience:

  • Specialist skills in water quality prediction with modelling packages such as PHREEQC or Geochemists Workbench
  • Knowledge of data management packages such as EsDAT and spatial data packages such as QGIS
  • Previous experience in the use of 3D geological modelling packages such as Leapfrog or VULCAN
  • Be a motivated self-starter with interest and enthusiasm to achieve high standards of productivity and professional standards to satisfy clients’ and management requirements.
  • Leadership skills; evidence of building high performing balanced multidisciplinary teams
