An opportunity has become available to join the leadership at Kowanyama State School as a Principal Advisor, Indigenous English as an Additional Language or Dialect (IEAL/D).
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced language expert to provide the school with targeted professional development, resources and advice to support the implementation of the (Prep) P-10 Australian Curriculum and the State Schools’ EAL/D Statement of the P-12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework for IEAL/D learners.
This role is offered on a temporary part-time basis, at 0.40 FTE and 30 hours per fortnight, until 05 December 2025, unless otherwise determined.

About the Opportunity
As the Principal Advisor, Indigenous English as an Additional Language or Dialect (IEAL/D) you will be responsible for providing the school with targeted professional development, resources and advice to support the implementation of the (Prep) P-10 Australian Curriculum and the State Schools' EAL/D Statement of the P-12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework for IEAL/D learners. The Principal Advisor, (Indigenous EAL/D) reports to the Regional Director or delegate.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinate and conduct professional development, targeted to identified IEAL/D needs for curriculum leaders, designated coaches and teachers using the department's Guidelines for Professional Learning.
- Strengthen curriculum leaders, designated coaches and teachers knowledge of the IEAL/D frameworks as they relate to the Australian Curriculum by focusing professional development on student learning, effective teaching strategies and how to differentiate learning.
- Support curriculum leaders, designated coaches and teachers with the teaching of IEAL/D students by identifying the English language demands of tasks, texts and interactions, and identifying targeted language teaching, resources and strategies to help students meet the demands of the curriculum in a whole class context.
- Build personal relationships and a knowledge base which foster an understanding of factors that influence Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language ecologies in the region, and the linguistic repertoires of families and students, and promote the ethos of the State Schools Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages Statement.
A significant proportion of the duties of this position involve policy and program development, direct communication and support services for Aboriginal persons and Torres Strait Islander persons. It is not mandatory for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person to fill this position.
